I think it is a mistake to lure tourists back at this moment in time. We should first completely wipe out the menace, as we don't want any chance that our guests be hurt in any way.

Pakistan should have stopped cricket tours unilaterally, rather than being forced by the attack on the sri lankan team.

Once the scourge of terrorism is eliminated, and these russian/bharatiya/us proxies are thrown out or snuffed out, then we can concentrate whole heartedly on promoting tourism and investment again.

A government which cannot guarantee the life of its own citizens, has no right to expect foreign tourists to come and risk theirs.

Pakistan Army organises Swat Festival for the people of Malakand

The Swat Festival, or Swat Amn Mela, is a step towards reviving tourism, the mainstay of the economy of scenic Malakand division which had been turned into a living hell by hardline cleric Maulana Fazlullah who wanted to impose his own version of Islamic laws in the region.

It is a carnival atmosphere as thousands of people have turned up to see visitors from different parts of the country to watch the Swat Festival. Every face is gleaming with joy. The Swat Festival is a welcome event for the entertainment-starved people of Swat, the region where Maulana Fazlullah and his supporters led a bloody rebellion until they were routed by government troops in 2009. They had tried to erase everything that they thought was un-Islamic, including the centuries-old culture of the Pathan.

Fed up with the activities of militants, residents of Swat fully supported government troops against militants.

It’s a different Swat today, with bazaars crowded with shoppers and people doing their businesses without fear of militants. Today’s Swat owes everything to Pakistan Army troops and law enforcers who laid down their lives to make it possible.

There is a flurry of activity in the main bazaar in Mingora, with taxis and buses honking horns, auto-rickshaws making their way into the bustling bazaar and roadside vendors shouting at the top of their voices to attract customers.

“Swat Festival has been organised to provide relief to the people who underwent psychological trauma under the Taliban,” Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Tourism Syed Aqil Shah said.

He heaped praises on the Pakistan Army which organised the festival with the assistance of PARSA and local hoteliers. The festival also featured musical shows which attracted artists from other parts of the country.

It also featured events like kite-flying, canoeing, paragliding, dancing, car rallies, sporting events besides all this a poetry recitation.

“Hoteliers in Swat, the popular ski resort in Pakistan, have announced a 50-per cent cut in their charges for guests during the festival,” said Shah. He added that the Swat peace gala was an effort to boost confidence of local people.

It’s quite encouraging that a large number of people are turning up at the festival which shows the scenic valley, once known as “Little Switzerland” is recovering after the reign of terror unleashed by militants.

Local residents are very happy with the event. They hope that the Swat Festival would play a vital role in the revival of tourism which has been a major source of livelihood for them.

“We cannot forget the time when thousands of people displaced by fighting lived in tents under the scorching sun. The people of Malakand division put up a brave fight against militancy,” Shah said. “I cannot forget the day when I first visited a camp where I saw a bare-footed young man. When I asked him, ‘Do you want to play?’ he said, ‘yes’ but I’ve lost my football in the war.”

“We are thankful to the industrialists of Sialkot and the government for their donations of sport gears and we organised ‘Play for Peace Festival’ in each and every camp,” Shah added. “This Amn Mela (Peace Festival) is an effort to express solidarity with the people of Malakand division,” Shah said.

The minister said that the government was planning to lay an Astroturf hockey ground in Kabal sub-division of Swat besides providing facilities of cricket and football to the youth.

Custodial Killings

Relatives of 23 suspected militants killed by Pakistani forces in the north-west on Tuesday said they were in custody at the time of their death.

Elders in Dir district said most of the suspects were handed over to the armed forces by local village councils.

The military said the men were killed in a shoot-out during a search operation in the Maidan area of Dir.

The killings came a day after four suicide bombers attacked a military camp in Timergara town.

One soldier was killed in the attack.

The Pakistani military has been often accused of carrying out extrajudicial killings of Taliban suspects to avenge militant attacks on military targets.

The military denies this charge.

The army launched an operation in Swat, Dir and some neighbouring areas last summer, forcing more than two million people to flee the region.

Months later, the areas were declared "clear" and the refugees started to return to their homes.

But sporadic attacks by suspected Taliban militants have continued.

'In detention'

On Tuesday, the military in Dir notified the families of 23 suspects that they needed to collect their bodies from a local hospital.

They said that the men had been killed in a search operation.

"The clashes took place in Kalpani and Upper Maidan areas," said Brigadier Nadim Mirza, the top commander of operations in Maidan.

But relatives told the BBC that nearly all the slain suspects had been in detention at the main paramilitary base in Timergara.

"Most of them were school boys. Some got inspired by the Taliban and joined their training camps in Swat but were weaned away by their parents before they could get into real fighting," Saeed Gul, a local elder and former parliamentarian told the BBC.

"Others were either close relatives of known militants, or had given shelter to militants at some time out of fear or favour."

One of the men who was killed had stopped attending a Taliban training camp in Swat due because of severe epilepsy, according to a Maidan resident who knew the family well.

Another victim was allegedly arrested by the security forces on 9 November last year - and news of it was conveyed by a Dir-based military spokesman to the media on the same day.

White it is good to see that SWAT is returning to normalcy, why don't you guys come out of denial about the real issues?

You sometimes call these terrorists "Kharjites", sometimes not real Muslims, sometimes brainwashed Muslims and sometimes proxies of kaffirs!

It is very clear to everyone who would look that they did what they did because they fervently believed (or were made to believe) that they were doing it for Islam. That all Pakistanis who were not with them were Wajib-Ul-Qatal (same as the Ahmedis are, Shia are, Barelvis are etc. for some). That the major source of finance for them is poppy and gulf money (Arabs have outsourced the messy business of Jihad to Af-Pak, they just finance and direct it).

Your other points are "to the point", you just need to accept reality. That is the first step to resolve real issues.
