Two bombs hit Pakistan city; 25 dead

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Two bombs targeting Shiite Muslims exploded in Pakistan's largest city Friday, one outside a hospital treating victims from the first blast hours earlier. At least 25 people were killed and around 100 others wounded.

Police appealed for calm following the strikes in the chaotic city of 16 million people. Karachi has a history of religious violence between Shiite and Sunni Muslims, and has been tense in recent weeks due to deadly clashes between rival political parties.

In late December, a bomb in the southern port city killed 44 Shiites attending a procession to mark Ashura, the anniversary of the death of revered Shiite figure Imam Hussein, sparking deadly riots. Friday's blasts coincided with Arbaeen, the final day of the annual 40-day mourning period for Hussein.

One of Pakistan's many al-Qaeda linked Sunni extremist groups will be suspected in the twin attacks.

Zulfiqar Mirza, the provincial home minister, said one or both of the attacks may have been suicide blasts but that it too soon to say for sure.

The first blast targeted a bus carrying worshipers, most of them women and children, killing 12 and wounding 49, officials said. The bomb was attached to a motorcycle and detonated as the bus drove to an Arbaeen procession, witnesses said.

The second bomb exploded outside the entrance to the emergency ward at Jinnah Hospital, which was packed with victims and relatives of those killed and wounded in the earlier attack. It was either hidden on a motorbike or in or close to an ambulance, a witness and a government official said.

Provincial health minister Dr. Sagheer Ahmad said 13 people were killed in that blast.

Bomb disposal squad official Munir Sheikh said a third bomb was later defused in the parking lot of the hospital.

Shiites were also attacked in Iraq on Friday as they attended Arbaeen commemorations.

A suicide attacker detonated a car bomb alongside a crowd of Shiite pilgrims walking to a holy city south of Baghdad, killing at least 27 people and wounding 70. It was the third deadly bombing this week against Shiites converging on the holy city of Karbala, where Imam Hussein was killed in battle in 632.

In Karachi, Ashfaq Ali survived the bus attack but lost two sons. He sat on the floor near a pool of blood.

"I will keep sitting here because it is my sons' blood," he said, wailing. "I want the terrorists to kill me as well."

Pakistan's Sunnis and minority Shiites generally live in peace, but extremists from the two sects have targeted one another's leaders and worshipers. Al-Qaeda and the Taliban are Sunni extremist groups and also despise Shiites, believing them to be infidels.

The Pakistani Taliban, whose stronghold is in the northwestern mountains far from Karachi, has staged a string of bombings in recent months against government, security forces and Western targets, but not Shiite ones. The bombings, which have killed hundreds of people, follow a major Pakistan army offensive against the militants near the Afghan border.

At least 25 dead in Karachi bomb blasts

Friday, February 05, 2010

KARACHI: At least 25 people were killed and 100 others wounded on Friday after two bombs planted on motorcycles struck a bus at Shahra-e-Faisal and Jinnah Hospital in Karachi.

Women and children were among 12 people killed when a motorcyle packed with explosives rammed into a bus of mourners travelling on Shahra-e-Faisal to join a procession at the end of the holy month of Muharram.

A second bomb attack took place near the emergency ward at Jinnah Hospital, where the dead and wounded were being rushed, killed another 13 people.

Witnesses and officials said the bus was packed with mourners heading to a religious procession to mark the last day of Muharram in Karachi.

The attacks were carried out by suicide bombers on motorcycles, a bomb disposal official said.

"Both of the blasts are of the same nature. Both were suicide and both were on motorcycles," Munir Ahmad Sheikh, told Geo.

"In the first attack, the bomber hit the bus. In the second attack, the bomber sitting on a motorcycle exploded himself," he added.

RIP.

This new trend of a second attack on the hospitals caring for the victims is particularly heinous.

Not that one expects any humanity from these beasts.

RIP!!

This attempt of creating a divide and misconceptions between shia and sunnis is going to fail as miserably as did it previously on 10th Moharam!!

Any suspects or admissions so far?

Could it be the same sectarian gangs like the Sipah-e-sahaba etc. who were into this game for long earlier?

SS have been missing in action since long. Jhangvi was believed to have participated (assisted) with those (talibans) who attacked GHQ. Jhangvi and likes have been mended so i dont think they would be part of this.

The sunni shia war had ended long way back. It is just the same bas**ds who have been given free tickets to jannat by PA in our tribal areas. They tried to creat rift between Christians and Muslims of Pakistan and failed, so now they have shifted the focus to shias.

But guess what they failed twice!

^^ Hope so! Last thing one needs is sectarian warfare. Good to see the people keeping their calm under this provocation.

Yes I agree with you Xeric. SS and the Jhangvi group have long since deteriorated.....the only followers want to be left in peace. Same goes for the other side eg Sepah Mohammedi.

What these attackers fail to understand is that ''Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me''.....lets hope no one gets fooled again.

Yeah. You know i always wonder what would be the look on the face of those handlers/planners when very after an attack a shia or Christian leader comes up on TV and says out loud that these attacks can never create a rift between us!!

What a face-palm!
