Officials and local residents said the suspected US drone crashed in North Waziristan, near the Afghan border.

PESHAWAR: Intelligence officials and local residents say a suspected US drone has crashed in Pakistan's lawless tribal area near the Afghan border.

The officials say the crash occurred Sunday in North Waziristan, some 2.5 miles northwest of the main town of Miranshah.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to media.

Local resident Saudur Rehman says he heard gunfire just before he saw the drone crash and local tribesmen were congratulating each other for shooting it down.

A similar crash occurred in September 2008, but the Pakistani army denied claims by intelligence officials that troops and local people shot down the aircraft. It said it was a technical problem. -AP

Taliban claim shooting down second US drone

ISLAMABAD (January 27 2010): Taliban on Tuesday claimed that they have shot down another US drone aircraft in the country's North Waziristan tribal region. It is the second US drone aircraft to have shot down in the same region in four days. On January 23, Taliban had claimed to have brought down a suspected US drone.

Tribesmen said that the second drone was shot down late on Monday night and the wreckage came down in Afghan side of the border. The militants used anti-aircraft missiles from a mobile launcher fixed on a vehicle to hit the unmanned aircraft, a tribal elder said on phone from Miranshah, the centre of North Waziristan. Tribesmen on Monday announced to gift a car to the tribesman who had shot down the US drone aircraft on January 23.
