Al-Qaeda may provoke new Indo-Pak war: Gates
Updated at: 1359 PST, Wednesday, January 20, 2010
Al-Qaeda may provoke new Indo-Pak war: Gates NEW DELHI: Al-Qaeda is seeking to de-stabilise the entire South Asia region and could trigger a war between nuclear-armed Pakistan and India, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates told reporters on Wednesday.
Groups under Al-Qaeda's "syndicate" in Afghanistan and Pakistan are trying "to destabilise not just Afghanistan, not just Pakistan, but potentially the whole region by provoking a conflict perhaps between India and Pakistan through some provocative act," Gates said during a visit to New Delhi.
"It's important to recognise the magnitude of the threat that the entire region faces," he said following talks with his Indian counterpart, A.K. Antony.
Gates cited three main groups operating under Al-Qaeda's "umbrella," the Taliban forces fighting in Afghanistan, Taliban elements targeting Pakistan's government and the Islamist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in Pakistan focused on India.
Although he praised India for exercising restraint after the 2008 Mumbai attacks -- which Delhi blamed on LeT -- Gates suggested India could not be expected to remain restrained if it was attacked again.
"I think it's not unreasonable to assume India patience would be limited were there to be further attacks," he said.
The Mumbai assault left 166 dead and India has demanded Pakistan come under more international pressure to rein in militant groups on its soil.
Gates described India as a vital partner in the struggle against extremist threats, expressed appreciation for its economic aid to Afghanistan and said that he discussed how to bolster US-India military cooperation.

Re: Al Qaeda could provoke new India-Pakistan war: Gates
Al-Qaeda wants South Asia war, says US secretary Gates
Al-Qaeda is trying to destabilise the whole of South Asia hoping to provoke war between India and Pakistan, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates says.
"It's important to recognise the magnitude of the threat," Mr Gates said, after meeting his Indian counterpart AK Antony in Delhi.
Mr Gates said India might not show restraint if it suffered another attack like the one in 2008 on Mumbai.
Blamed on Pakistan-based militants, the attack killed more than 160 people.
The two countries' peace process is still on hold.
The US defence secretary said militant groups in South Asia - the Taliban in Afghanistan and in Pakistan, and the Pakistan-based group Lashkar-e-Taiba - were seeking to spark conflict between India and Pakistan, or to provoke instability in Pakistan.
He said: "It's dangerous to single out any one of these groups and say, 'If we can beat that group, that will solve the problem,' because they are in effect a syndicate of terrorist operators intended to destabilise this entire region."
When one group succeeded in carrying out an attack, all of them gained in capability and reputation, he said.
"A victory for one is a victory for all."
Mr Gates praised his hosts for the restraint shown by India in the aftermath of the attack on Mumbai (Bombay) in November 2008, for which Lashkar-e-Taiba militants operating out of Pakistan have been blamed.
But he warned: "It is not unreasonable to assume Indian patience would be limited were there another attack."
After militants attacked parliament in Delhi in 2001, India massed troops on the border with Pakistan, but the country made no such move following the 2008 attack.
The two countries have fought three wars since independence from Britain.
The BBC's Chris Morris, in Delhi, says the US would like to see India and Pakistan working together against the militant threat - but Mr Gates said co-operation would be a tough sell.
Mr Gates is to hold talks in Islamabad on Thursday.
He said any conflict between India and Pakistan would only further the militants' agenda - as well as throwing American policy in Afghanistan and Pakistan into disarray.
The defence secretary also praised the "extraordinary" financial aid India had given Afghanistan, but acknowledged this had created tension with Pakistan.
"There are real suspicions both in India and Pakistan about what the other is doing in Afghanistan," he said.
"So I think each country focusing its efforts on development, on humanitarian assistance, perhaps in some limited areas of training, but with full transparency for each other, would help allay these suspicions and frankly create opportunities."
Reports in recent days have suggested the US would like India to help train Afghan police.
BBC News - Al-Qaeda wants South Asia war, says US secretary Gates

This actually makes me wonder.....what will the Talis gain from destabilizing South Asia.....they might as well target other more non islamic countries if they are to dream of the 70 virgins, heaven, the whole nine yards.....
I think there is a bigger hand involved as well......someone who might be benefitting from us killing each other and Indias growing power and technology capped before she can claim the spot amongst the world super powers......hmmmmm makes me think....nah never mind!

Re: Al-Qaeda may provoke new Indo-Pak war: Gates
While in Pakistan, he would lick our balls, and now when he is in india, let him do theirs.
Let's see if he has the guts to say these words when he is visiting Pakistan.
Just another step towards the indian appeasement by the US, we can also call this as scare-mongering as this is the only purpose it serves.
Using terror as a pretext to pressurize States isnt new, why dont Gates suggest india to bring a Corps or two at their borders to stop these terrorists to enter india instead of patting india to mourn louder! Let's see how india would feel when it had to commit forces to fight terrorism on home ground as Pakistan already is, we'll see what india has to say then, we'll see if india would feel like pointing fingers on others then!
And the US, well, you people have no face, you have shown that you can go down to the whorish level when you have to please someone!

IA has been fighting terrorists for decades! How else were all those terrorists coming in Kashmir dispatched to hell? Pakistan itself claims there are more than 500,000 IA soldiers in Kashmir dispatching the terrorists to jahannum!

This was the lamest reply that you have ever given to me, vinod.
Anywaz, the only thing that merits a reply in you post is that i am alarmed if you can even compare the freedom fighters in Kashmir with the terrorist ex-AQ and TTP!
Dont go by the words (freedom fighter etc etc) i am more concerned by the tactics, weaponry, training, battle hardness, mentality of these two groups which differ by light years!

Re: Al-Qaeda may provoke new Indo-Pak war: Gates
Most of those killed in Kashmir are Pakistani Punjabis coming after being trained for the job. We had Taliban veterans there too for a period when Pakistan tried to use them after the Afghan war was over. We dealt with them as they came.
I do see a difference however. We never used artillery and planes in Kashmir. Never were hundreds or thousands or millions of "IDPs" created. Never were whole towns and villages flattened in the name of fighting those terrorists.
Our army went in and gave these cowards "jahannum ki raseed" from close quarters. Something totally different from our neighbors who seem to be the only ones to use the weapons of war on "their own people"!
