The Road not Taken by Zulfiqar
Theories and perspectives galore. The day when Mirza exploded onto the TV screens and set the ball rolling, he, in fact, left us wondering to where it could lead us all. Is Zardari behind this theater of the absurd or the establishment is seeking an endgame to Karachi morass?
We, the mortal souls, do seek answers to such intriguing questions to satiate our inordinate longing for resolution to suspense stories. According to the Greek Tragedy, there always is a haematic act on the part of the hero which triggers a chain of events resulting in his fall.
But who in Karachi doesn't know about who pulls the strings behind the see-through curtains? Still the question remains what motivated Zulfiqar Mirza to take a collision course that ultimately could decide his own fate.
This could be anyone or may be no one except for Mirza himself, who in heat of the moment, decided to enter into history by indicting the most holy cows in the contemporary politics.
This whole issue began when PPP launched an operation cleanup in Layari under the Interior Minister Rehman Malik to win back MQM into the coalition government in the name of reconciliation doctrine. By the way, this reconciliation is not new to the PPP leadership. The history of PPP in Pakistan's politics is that of the reconciliation with those against whom it got its mandate. Here again Rehman Malik left out the other areas during the operation cleanup and this was the fact that triggered a revolt within the ranks of PPP workers or gangs, so to say. Zulfiqar Mirza now was torn between his loyalty with his political mentor and friend Asif Ali Zardari, and the groups or workers who came closer to him during his tenure as the senior minister in Sindh government.
