Raymond Davis released: Rana Sanaullah

LAHORE: US national Raymond Davis, the accused in the double-murder case in Lahore has been released, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah confirmed on Wednesday. The Punjab government claims it played no part in the release of Davis.
Sanaullah added that the families of the victims in the Lahore shooting pardoned Davis, and have signed pardon papers in this regard.

“The court first indicted him but the families later told the court that they have accepted the blood money and they have pardoned him,” Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah told Reuters.
“The court acquitted him in the murder case.”
Lawyers of the victims’ families claim the families were forcibly taken to Kot Lakhpat Jail by unidentified men and made to sign papers pardoning Davis.

No contact has been made with any members of the family as yet.
Initial reports from sources state that Davis has been flown to London.
Earlier in the day, a sessions court judge in Lahore had formally indicted US national Davis.
According to Express 24/7 correspondent Muhammad Rizwan, in the hearing that took place at Kot Lakhpat jail, Davis’ counsel Zahid Hussain Bokhari tried to stall the ruling saying he did not trust the investigation process. However, the judge ignored his statement and formally indicted the accused.

Davis was only indicted for double murder and not for other charges like espionage.
Davis was arrested after he killed two Pakistanis, Faizan and Faheem, in Lahore’s Mozang area, on January 27, 2011.
In the last hearing, Davis had refused to receive any documents or sign the charge-sheet. His attorneys had said they had received it on his behalf and had asked the court to include it in its orders. According to sources they had sought further time to prepare for the trial.

Charge-sheet

Earlier, on February 15, 2011, the police had submitted a 25-page charge-sheet in the court declaring that Davis had murdered two people and was not acting in self-defence.
The charge-sheet stated that Davis’ self-defence plea was false as it was intentional murder. It read that the guns recovered from the possession of the deceased were not loaded and they had also not pointed a gun at Davis. Fingerprints were found on the pistols’ triggers and on bodies of the deceased and tests show that the bullets remained in the magazines of their guns, not the chambers.

The charge-sheet also stated that the police had recovered a GPS tracker, mobile phones, wireless sets, a survival kit and photographs from Davis’ car. The accused, it says, is uncooperative with the police during investigation.
The charge-sheet also contained the statements of 47 witnesses, who have said that Davis did not shoot the men in self-defence. They also said that Davis had shot directly at the two boys and kept shooting even when one of them tried to flee.

Immunity
The Lahore High Court (LHC) ruled on Monday that the matter of immunity for Davis will be decided by the trial court, and disposed of all petitions challenging his diplomatic status in Pakistan.

Dear Pakistanis

My lawyers dictated to me that we may be able to twist various aspects of Vienna convention on diplomatic relations. We tried, we failed!!!!!

Line the pockets of the politicians? Been there, done that!

Maybe the ''independant'' Judiciary system could be manipulated......

Searching...........searching..................... ....................

And then there was the silver lining...... 'Diyaa'(blood money) implemented as salient features in the legal system that can be exploited by the wealthy. Thank my lucky stars, all 50 of them.....a human life could be so cheap, I never knew!

Thank you Zia ul Haq

Signed

R.D
(......lol @ the originality of the name!!! )

(Tough luck to any foreigner/gora/firangi who gets caught trying to err while at the mercy of the Pakistani mob.)

Well, it was kind of inevitable.

USA had applied its full powers to get him out. Difficult for anyone to resist that, especially Pakistan under current circumstances.

Hi,

Actually Davis's arrest has served the purpose that it needed to---isi is back in the driver's seat----. PPP has been shoved back to somewhere close to its original position----the ppp doesnot have any leg over the army----. The public is back in the millitary corner----.

The public has realized that it was a blunder to have the isi bashed by PPP Benazir Haqqani and co in public in the world forum on world tv media---.

Davis----thankyou for shooting those two low life robbers---.

May be. I see a lot of online Pakistanis abusing army and ISI as well on this issue.

It is clear that such decisions are not taken by the civilian government in Pakistan.

Why is it that the local authorities and prosecutors failed to file a petition against Raymond Davis that could hold him for spying???

The corrupt politicians wanted to let him go from the moment he fired those shots......only condition was scores of hefty Benjamin Franklins warming their pockets.

You are beating the wrong horse.

The politicians had nothing to do with this issue.

It was the game of PA and ISI through and through. The politicians have long ceded this space to them.

Based on the reports heres what, I think, happened. The ISI needed to put an end to 500 or so odd US assassins running amok in Pakistan.

Maybe the ISI had hoped to uncover the cloak and dagger operations of the US in Pakistan, and the prospect of a possible compromise on the identity (and just that) of two agents seemed feasible in exchange for the true ID/intentions of the ''contractor''.

The ISI had never assumed that the the two agents would however fall victim to the gun of the ''contractor''.

When the whole affair got out of hand, the US started to apply pressure on the pawn sitting in the presidential palace in Islamabad and his cronies.

The ISI, however, wasnt willing to give up until a fair exchange was possible ie US to withdraw all its secret agents from our soil. The highly publicized meeting between General Kiyani and Mullen was rather an effort to come to a sound conclusion.

Raymond Davis' freedom could have the pound and party of the settlement between the two countries. Fair enough, we give you back your guy, you give us back our freedom.

And then came the drones. USAs bottom line on the whole facet......that the US is the one calling the shots.
This was merely a statement on the USs part, a warning ''Dont think that you can stand up to us. We will bomb your innocent civilians if you do.''

This is but a mere hypothetical analysis (you favourite word V)....we might never know, just as you might never be able to prove that the PA and the ISI were the steeds in the chariot race.

Your army claimed recently the vast majority of the killed by drones are militants and terrorists.

the ones that PA can't reach or kill without flattening whole tribal towns and villages and creating hundreds of thousands of IDPs.

So are you thankful to the yanks for doing your dirty job?
