Pakistan's stance on Raymond Davis case being perceived as diplomatic win

2011-03-09 12:30:00

Islamabad's principled position on the Raymond Davis issue, which has pushed Washington on the back foot without any rupture in their bilateral ties, is being perceived as a diplomatic win for Pakistan.

Pakistan's firm stance over the Raymond Davis saga has counterbalanced the pressure mounted by the United States for the immediate release of the CIA defence contractor, who has been charged with cold-blooded murder of two Pakistanis in Lahore on January 27.

Although this episode has strained relations between the premier spy agencies of the two countries - the Central Intelligence Agency and the Inter-Services Intelligence, both nations have so far prevented their strategic ties from being totally marred by this isolated incident.

In background interviews and discussions, foreign diplomats complimented Pakistan for making the US to give in to the rule of law, The Nation reported.

Some of them even suggested that Pakistan should prosecute Davis under its anti-terror laws, as in their view, the Lahore episode was not short of any terrorist act, and that he deserved prosecution after it came to light that the American national was involved in espionage activities in Pakistan.

Sources privy to the US diplomatic activities were of the view that Washington has been carefully following a wait and watch policy, and would unfold its counter-strategy after March 14, when the Lahore High Court would take up the issue of Davis' diplomatic immunity.

According to the sources, the US might try to negotiate for the custody of Davis, should the court refuse to accept the US claim. There are various options being weighed by Washington in this regard, with one relating to intervention of a third party in persuading Islamabad to release Davis, they added.

"This would be purely a political solution, and the US might request Saudi Arabia as a last resort to help secure custody of the accused", said the sources, adding that the US might also consider punitive economic measures against Pakistan as part of its arm-twisting tactics.

However, they said that this probability would not a potential option, as the US cannot afford to cut its aid to Pakistan because of its critical cooperation in the war against terror. (ANI)

Hi,

The united states has severely bungled on the issue regarding Davis---and that totally falls into the category of extreme arrogance, callous handling and un-called for statements on the part of the U S president and secretary of state Clinton----.

It is the belief in their being self-righteous and right under any and every circumstance that has put them into a corner----ordinarily---the american president wouldnot make such a statement right aay and neither would the sec of state----.

Actually a regular american president and sec of state would not barge into this issue as they did----but Obama getting bad advice and Hillary being herself---just shat on the pakistanis as if the pakistanis were of no significance---they took the pakistanis for the iraqis and afghanis----but incidently they got caught by a provincial govt that is anti u s and and active judiciary.

Only if these two had kept their mouths shut-----made some calming statements and later on apologized to the family---they would have been in a better position to ask for his release.

But hen there are some other issues that have come out with these deaths---after shooting those two---Davis walked out of his car and shot the dead in the head and took pictures of those two---at that stage it became more of an execution----it also showed the state of mind of Davis----. Getting out of the car and shooting them again changed the scenario completely---.

Next---the issue with the items that he had on him---his bad attitudetook it over the
edde---his initial statements to the police were not helpfull either and worst of all---the death of a pedestrian at the hands of his rescue team driver sealed his fate.

The u s has its executioners all over the world in the form of executive services/darkwaters/bearclaw/and similiar names since 9/11----the illegals have been given a legitimnate name---outside vendors can do the killing for the agency without facing any legal hardships and no congressional hearings----.

America hates precendence setting when things are going against its operatives----because that would stop them from doing what they do---and it will give courage to every itsy bitsy nation to raised their head and act belligerantly to what the u s demands.

Saudi Arabia should not involve themselves in this issue---it might backfire on them---.

We have no right to celebrate independence because we are still a slave and we take dictations from our lord America for every single issue in the country. As Raymond had allegations of double murdering and his act was strongly condemned by the whole nation, he was set freed. Imagine the intensity of heat and grief on the sad incident that wife of a victim committed suicide out of feelings of helplessness and despair from the justice delivering faction of the society. Religious groups and political parties pushed the families of victim to accept blood money referring it as a shariah law. At last but not least it was proven that money can buy you anything even pardon. It is shame for the whole nation that we have no dignity but compromises in life .We pardoned Raymond Davis for three lives but could not manage a pardon for Aafia for just attempt to attack on Nato officer. Shame, woe and curse many times on all of us for being sold out for dollars and humble slaves of America.
