Kayani’s firm resolve
Published: December 1, 2010
General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani’s letter to President Obama rightly warns about the repercussions of giving India precedence over Pakistan in the context of the Afghan imbroglio. The letter particularly cautions the
President that a scenario, where Pakistan is relegated to the background would make the NATO and the US achieve nothing. It is hard to question his stand against letting India fish in Pakistan’s troubled waters, though the US has been doing so. That fact remains that Indian involvement in Afghanistan’s political and military affairs is meant to corner Pakistan in a sticky wicket. At the same time, in a meeting of Formation Commanders in Rawalpindi, General Kayani firmly stated that the NATO forces would not be allowed to carry out ground operations on our soil. This assertive stance of the army vis-à-vis the US is welcome. It is satisfying to know that now the US is being conveyed in no uncertain terms of our reservations about allowing India to create a niche for itself in Afghanistan.
Already precious time has been wasted in taking notice of Indian games aimed at creating violence in Pakistan. The army top brass also expressed its will to bring life back to normalcy in the tribal areas through the construction of basic infrastructure. Whereas this commitment on the part of the army is laudable, the fact remains that much of our woes are
a direct offshoot of the drone attacks the US is conducting with impunity in the tribal areas. This has pitted the tribal population against their very own compatriots with whom they had co-existed peacefully for ages. So, clearly condemning the ground attacks alone is not enough. The extensive amount of the destruction of life and property unleashed by aerial attacks provides willing recruits to the militants, results in mass-casualty attacks and hurts our stability in several other ways. Hence, the urgent need for the army to tell the US to stop this onslaught on our security and stability.
