Strong defence..!
Strong defence
Attiqa Ahmed
Security is essential for the state as the definition of the state is “group of the people occupying a defined territory and politically organized under the government with sovereignty”. The essential component of a state as the definition suggests, are people, territory, government and sovereignty so all these components required security from internal and external threats. The concept of war has been in existence since the time immemorial, even when people used to live in a cave; they had acquired weapons to defend themselves from the outside danger. As human beings made headway in different fields of life, the necessity of security and defence increased. But in the beginning of the 20th century all ancient things were modified on to advance level, same is the case with weapons. During Second World War a few states acquired technology but they kept it secret from the other alliances. After that, in the wake of cold war (USA vs. USSR) two superpowers went nuclear in order to make them strong and deter each other from any threat. Deterrence is not a theory and it does not depend on rationality, it does only depend on the fear. Afghanistan and Iraq were sovereign states, but Afghanistan had some internal intrigue or problems. Recently America has influence on the both states. Nowadays America has also influence on Pakistan. One important thing is that Pakistan is a frontline state in war on terror along with US. Before War on Terror America, threatening Pakistan said “Are you with us or without us”. Pakistan is the sovereign state. Government should play role to counter this influence. If we look at the situation of Pakistan we see that it is the security system of Pakistan which halts India from attacking Pakistan. Countries seek nuclear technology for up-gradation of nuclear weapons in order to preserve their power and enhance their foreign policy. These weapons of mass destruction take biological, chemical and radiological form. Nuclear weapons have devastating potential for destroying enemy’s properties, cities and industries. India’s nuclear weapons are direct threat to Pakistan. In response Pakistan was forced to make nuclear weapons to counter the Indian fear and the threat. Presently many states are presumed to have developed nuclear weapons. They have acquired nuclear weapons because of insecurity and psychological pressure. It is proven that if a country has a good security system, nobody can challenge its sovereignty. Powerful security system can help the state to make headway in the good governance, economy, democracy and military field within the state, then its border will be safe and it will check infiltration of enemy agents and illegal immigration. Very recently Mumbai attacks once again posed security problems for Pakistan. India wanted to do some selected surgical strikes on the border areas but due to Pakistan’s powerful security systems she failed to implement her desire and committing aggression against Pakistan. Indian military strength is much stronger as compared to Pakistan; therefore Pakistan needs nuclear weapons to defend it. There are a number of issues facing India and Pakistan and Kashmir is one of them. Both the countries have fought three wars on this issue. Now the issue of water is also going to be a major issue. Both these issues have the potential to lead both the countries to war any time. It is a fact that only strong security is preventing India from attacking Pakistan. At present Pakistan is facing terrorism. Pakistan’s powerful security system has succeeded in controlling the terrorism to some extent in the country. In the current scenario international politics is based on realism as there are no permanent friends and enemies. The quest for achieving nuclear capability is attributed for different factors including threat perception, insecurity, defence, deterrence, etc. It is, sometimes, also a matter of honour and prestige for some states. Both Pakistan and India should play their role to settle down their conflicts. More than 60 years have passed but due to a rivalry between them both the countries have failed to solve any of their problems. They have also fought deadly wars inflicting heavy losses to each other. With the every day passing the enmity between them is increasing. Dozens of high level meetings have taken place but despite a lot of confidence building measures no progress has been achieved to build peace and settle the big issues facing them. The recently foreign ministers meeting held in Islamabad totally failed to achieve any results and ended on dismal note. In this situation Pakistan has no option except to strengthen her defences by acquiring all kinds of weapons including nuclear arsenal. There is no denying the fact that Pakistan is a responsible state and it has always worked for peace in the region and at international level. It does not want arms race with any country but it cannot ignore its defence. Survival is important for any state but without strong defence no state can survive. In the present era no country can consider itself safe if it does not possess atomic weapons.
