Default Kayani in Kabul, Delhi up against challenge

Kayani in Kabul, Delhi up against challenge

C. Raja Mohan
Mon Jun 28 2010

As General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani heads to Kabul on Monday to ratchet up pressure on President Hamid Karzai to share power with extremist Pashtun groups nurtured by the Pakistan Army, India will soon have to demonstrate its relevance to Afghanistan’s rapidly evolving political dynamic.

On his trip to Kabul, Kayani will be accompanied by the chief of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence, Gen Ahmad Shuja Pasha. The two generals, who dominate the conception and conduct of Pakistan’s national security policy, have been making frequent visits to Kabul in the past couple of months.

Diplomatic observers here say there is no reason for Delhi to press the panic buttons at Kayani’s shuttle diplomacy. But they wonder if India has the political resolve to help its Afghan partners cope with Pakistan’s efforts to change the balance of power within and across Afghanistan.

With US now frustrating Karzai (not paying till corruption decreases) I think the Indians have not a single option left then to retreat with their tails between their legs. Indian love to run to Pakistani neighbours to use them to frustrate or terrorize Pakistan. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are the examples. Yet they whine when Pakistan gets help from China. Whatever the agenda will be for Aghanistan. It will be with Pakistan included as a major player. Period. Sri Lanka won the Tamil war (which was exported by India) thanks to Pakistan and Chinese assistance. Noit with the inferior Indian radars or exporting and supporting terror by India. Whatever is produced or exported by Afghanistan. It will have to go to Pakistani ports if it want to become economical intresting. We have to see the trillion dollars... India lost it.

India is bound for hard lesson and will soon find out where she stands in Afghanistan once US starts to pull out of Kabul next year.
