Srinagar, Oct 21: For the first time in 20-year-long turmoil in Indian administered Kashmir (IaK), authorities have given out the figures of the Indian soldiers killed in the restive region after the outbreak of militancy in 1989.

The police chief of IaK Kuldip Khoda disclosed that 5279 soldiers including policemen were killed in Kashmir after the outbreak of turmoil in 1989. “5279 police, paramilitary and military men were killed in the region in 20 years of turmoil. Among the dead include 889 policemen, 470 Special Police Officers and 131 Village Defence Committee (VDC) members,” he said.

The Village Defense Committees were raised by the government to fight militants in hilly areas.

The police chief said that as many as 821 police and para-military soldiers were killed in Kashmir from January 1, 2008 to August 31, 2009.

He disclosed the figures during the “Police Commemoration Day” observed across India to remember the event of October 21, 1959 when 10 CRPF personnel were killed in Chinese attack at hot springs in Ladakh.

Gun is irrelevant

The chief minister of Indian administered Kashmir, Omar Abdullah Wednesday said all the guns should be stopped as gun is no solution to any problem

Advocating that the external dialogue process between India and Pakistan should not break but efforts be made to resume it once again, Omar said, “There have been three wars between India and Pakistan and Kashmir has witnessed 20 years’ of saga of bloodshed but nothing has emerged other than miseries and loss of precious human lives. Not even a single inch of land has been transferred on either side”.

All the guns - here and there - should be stopped as gun is no solution to any problem. All issues in the world have been resolved through dialogue. It would be better for all us to understand and decide that talks are the only way to reach a solution for all issues”.

Welcoming the Indian government’s decision to begin internal dialogue will all shades of opinion in Kashmir, he expressed the hope that such process would be result-oriented. He said there is a need to assess and analyze the earlier dialogue processes and carry forward it with an aim to achieve the result.

4 Indian Soldiers, 2 Fighters killed in Kashmir

Wednesday, September 23, 2009

SRINAGAR: Army search operations triggered two separate gunbattles with suspected Muslim freedom fighters in the Indian-administered portion of Kashmir that killed at least six combatants, officials said Wednesday.

Two soldiers, including an officer, were fatally shot by suspected fighters early Wednesday in Baniyari, a village 28 miles (45 kilometers) northwest of Srinagar, the main city in Indian-occupied Kashmir, a police officer said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

The soldiers stormed a house after a tip that rebels were hiding there, the officer said. The insurgents retaliated with heavy gunfire, killing two of them, he said.

Another gunbattle killed two soldiers and two suspected rebels overnight in Ladoo, a forested area 40 miles (65 kilometers) west of Srinagar, said Col. K. Umamaheswar, an Indian army spokesman. Two other soldiers were wounded in the fighting, which started Monday, he said.

The fighting began after the army and police conducted search operations in the area, Umamaheswar said.

The accounts could not be independently verified, and there was no word from the freedom fighters who have been fighting Indian rule in disputed Kashmir since 1989. The two-decade-long uprising and Indian crackdown have killed more than 68,000 people, mostly civilians.

Indian soldier shot dead on Kashmir border: Indian Army

2009-09-01 15:45:00

An Indian soldier was killed Tuesday when Pakistani troops fired at Indian positions across the de facto border dividing Kashmir between the two countries, the Indian army said.

The incident took place in mountainous Mendhar district, about 450 kilometres (280 miles) south of Indian Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar.

"The soldier died in firing from across the Line of Control (LOC). Apparently it was Pakistani soldiers who targeted our positions," an army spokesman said.

India and Pakistan have fought two wars over Muslim-majority Kashmir, which is held in part by each country but claimed in full by both.

They agreed to a ceasefire along the Line of Control border in 2003 and started a peace process in 2004. Since then there have been sporadic clashes, and both countries have accused each other of violating the ceasefire.

"It is another case of ceasefire violation by Pakistan and we will soon lodge a strong protest," the Indian army spokesman said.

Pakistan denies Indian accusations of arming and funding the Islamic militants, who have been waging a rebellion in Indian Kashmir since 1989 that has left more than 47,000 people dead, according to an official tally.

Indian Soldier Killed in Pakistani Shelling

Jammu, Nov 8 [2009] (IANS) An Indian Army soldier was killed Sunday and two others were injured when mortar shells hit Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir from across the Line of Control (LoC), violating the ceasefire agreement, authorities said.

Heavy mortar shelling started from across the LoC at Poonch sector, about 240 km north of Jammu. The LoC divides Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

A Junior Commissioned Officer died on the spot while two other soldiers were wounded, a spokesman of the Indian Army said.

The spokesman said this could be because of Pakistan’s attempts to push in terrorists into India.

Senior Indian officer killed in Kashmir

A senior Indian paramilitary officer has been killed in an explosion in Indian-administered Kashmir, police officials say.

Deputy inspector general of the Border Security Force OP Tanwar died when his vehicle was hit by a blast near a border post in Jammu.

Three soldiers accompanying him were also injured in the explosion.

Both India and Pakistan claim the disputed Kashmir region in its entirety and have fought two wars over it.

Officials said Mr Tanwar had gone to a border post in the Balad area to investigate reports about men trying to cross the border into Jammu.

This is the first time an official of the rank of a deputy inspector general has been killed in the Jammu region, the BBC's Binoo Joshi in Jammu says.

In September, Indian troops said they had shot dead five militants who had crossed the Line of Control (LoC) which divides the disputed region of Kashmir.

Seventeen militants and eight Indian soldiers were killed in a five-day-long gunbattle at Kupwara near the LoC in March.

RIP to the brave soldiers. I am sure many times more terrorists have been dispatched to hell by them and their colleagues.

Now even the nature has come to their aid. The terrorist scum is being killed even by wild animals!

half of the 20,000 are most likely innocent civilians.

[mod edit] The terrorist killed 80,000 innocent muslims, as colateral damage of their heavenly jihad against us poor infidels, We have gained more land, than lost, and we are becoming a great nation, while you are in the ruins. I will take that, any day any time.
