Staff Report
KARACHI: A Lahore-bound passenger plane belonging to the Pakistan International Airlines (PK-302) was halted after a bird hit its engine on Friday. There were 421 passengers on board, who along with the crewmembers were taken off board while the plane was examined for safety.
The incidents of birds bumping into planes have been a usual menace and on occasions have inflicted heavy losses to the aircrafts especially Pakistan Air Force fighter jets.
The hovering of birds around the airport area has been attributed to dumping of garbage and solid waste, which attracts scavengers and other wild animals and birds.
Air Commodore Junaid Amin told Daily Times that they had to stop the plane under such circumstances and the plane could resume its routine flights after a thorough check.
The incident occurred minutes before the take-off and the pilot had the presence of mind to abort the flight to prevent any disaster, he said.
