Default Microsoft Security Bug Spreads Malicious Trojan Virus

Duqu Virus Exploits Microsoft Windows Software Flaw

Microsoft Corp said hackers exploited a previously unknown bug in its Windows operating system to infect computers with the Duqu virus, which some security experts say could be the next big cyber threat.

"We are working diligently to address this issue and will release a security update for customers," Microsoft said on Tuesday in a short statement.

News of Duqu surfaced in October when security software maker Symantec Corp said it had found a mysterious computer virus that contained code similar to Stuxnet, a piece of malicious software believed to have wreaked havoc on Iran's nuclear program.

Government and private investigators around the world are racing to unlock the secret of Duqu, with early analysis suggesting that it was developed by sophisticated hackers to help lay the groundwork for attacks on critical infrastructure such as power plants, oil refineries and pipelines.

Details on how Duqu got onto infected machines emerged for the first time on Tuesday as Microsoft disclosed its link to the infection.

Separately, Symantec researchers said they believe hackers sent the virus to targeted victims via emails with tainted Microsoft Word documents attached.

If a recipient opened the Word document and infected the PC, the attacker could take control of the machine and reach into an organization's network to propagate itself and hunt for data, Symantec researcher Kevin Haley told Reuters.

He said some of the source code used in Duqu was also used in Stuxnet, a cyber weapon believed to have crippled centrifuges that Iran uses to enrich uranium.

That suggests that the attackers behind Stuxnet either gave that code to the developers of Duqu, allowed it to be stolen, or are the same people who built Duqu, Haley said.

"We believe it is the latter," he said.

What was that reason again?

MS Windows is targeted more because it has been the most popular and successful OS ever and has put computing in the hands of everyone.

Iphone and other apple and open source OS have their own vulnerabilities.

Most often than not my opinions here are generalized and rarely do I attest my choices to any particular subject until I feel really passionately about the whole issues. I did however state that ''I'' prefer the apple/steve jobs /Mac OS over microsoft/bill gates/windows because thats about it....my opinion. You are free to disagree as much as you want and I am not trying to convince you otherwise (why a merc when you can still go the distance in a toyota, right?....)

Before we go onto the Mac is better/worse than PCs I must add that I do somewhat agree with you V. That if the OS X was to take the offensive from the virus sires as much as the windows has, the poor MacBuffs will be dearly bugged - pun intended.
At least for now, this fact is conditionally certain that a Mac user with no ''protected'' operating system is less at risk of catching the virus so to speak, in comparison to a windows customer who is mad bent on protecting his PC.

Being a Mac OS and Windows user, I do however love the fact that viruses aside Macs crash less. I am taking unexplainably puzzling shut offs avec/sans error messages. (And now now.....dont tell me it never happened to you.)
How could anyone defend that????
