On the contrary, Araz Bhai, - there's no doubting that he was sincere and upfront and wanted his best for his country - only that his best wasn't good enough.

Therein was he limited.

I have a reason for saying this:

Nawaz Sharif, crook though he is, as all politicians are, out of necessity and
seldom by choice, was spot on when he said, "Musharraf is a one man calamity"
And I believe he wud have been right or close to it on this WOT had he been not
deposed by Musharraf.

In a similar instance, though no similarities here - Bhutto cud have hacked a
much better job in the Afghan War had he not been overthrown by Zia.

Zardari btw, is not a politician - his wife was.

In retrospect, I think Imran Khan should be able to do a much better job with the addition of another iconic fatherly figure to his Party - Guess who?

For those bewildered by such odd terms as WOT and Politicians - here is a
helping hand:-

WOT: is of course 'Women on Top' - as you also must have thought.

Politician: is someone who counts 2+2 = 5
and 2+2 = 3
but never 4

Politician - another definition:

A noisy row is going on between a Lawyer, a Doctor, a Politician, and a Prostitute
as to whose profession is the oldest.

The Prostitute is confident that hers is the oldest recoganized profession

The Lawyer says that ever since the 'Abel and Cain' episode there has always been
dispute between men and have needed Lawyers to have it resolved.

The Doctor interjects that when God created this universe out of the CHAOS
and placed man to inhabit his world, man has been afflicted
by diseases and has needed treatment in one form or the other....

The Politician could'nt wait for him to finish and blurted out, "But who created CHAOS"

There is this saying that goes like "fools and children should not discuss art, politics and unfinished business (ie work in progress)"......the latter three (art, politics and unfinished business apply to Pakistan) lets just hope you dont fall in the first and foremost category.

I know Mushy has a dedicated following among womenhood - almost like the suicide bombers on the other side.

And I know when to keep my mouth shut.

And to make matters worse, I quite agree with HG Wells above

I dont know guys. As Pakistanis obviously you would have a better handle on things. But allow an Indian to explain how he sees things.

Much as the liberals and elite / educated amongst you would like to see Pakistan as a democracy, it is not in Pakistan's interest to be one.

The ship has sailed. The horse (or donkey) has bolted my friends. You have neither the luxury of the time or the resources or a world sanctioned honeymoon period where we look the other way as Pakistan continues its on today off tomorrow bumbling affair with democracy.

Just as the sun will rise, so too must it set. With similar certainty will we see the star appearances of Pakistan's feudo-civvy polity while the army catches its breath and prepares ground for its inevitable return.

You may like to diss Musharaf but from the sidelines the way i see it, your cupboard is starkly bare. And at the risk of flogging a long dead and now putrefying horse, and looking at your current and past civilian leaders your options are really not that great.

You need to see what fits you best. And what Pakistan needs today is uninterrupted leadership with the continuity of vision, policy, and direction that would bring. Your army, whatever other ills may plague it, is also at least used to order and discipline and getting things done. with a heavy hand should it warrant one.

Not for "mercurial" (for want of a more polite and politically correct term) Pakistani society is the back and forth of debate and consensus and compromise that is part and parcel of every functional democracy. Pakistanis for too long have suckled at the teat of authoritarian absolute power, and weaning them at this delicate stage from the warm wholesome goodness of that would be counterproductive and plunge the country further into anarchy.

Cheers, Doc

Musharraf has many supporters in all layers of the population. The time is right, he must stand for the next elections.
