Pakistanis are so vociferously opposing Aman ki Asha whilst Indians are not bothered.

Appears there is just one party that is against peace.

Actually I think Pakistani opinion is a bit more complex than that. We in India find it difficult to understand the nuances. I have been trying to understand it for some time and I still find it difficult.

I think Pakistanis (not all but many) expect India to behave with generosity but they will never accept India as a big brother. They expect to be treated with "respect" (something difficult for us to really understand the nuances here), as sovereign equal.

They want India to take the first and larger step without making them feel small. May be I am totally wrong but this is what I can understand based on my experience.

We on the other hand can't understand why this special demand for equality with India only! They never demand equality with China, USA, Afghanistan, Saudis or anyone else. Why with the "arch-enemy"?

Regarding Pakistani reaction

I think its partly due to the denial borne out of the subconscious realisation that indeed India is superior partly due to the very basis of Pakistan's creation , India will figure in every thing Pakistan does.

Regarding Indian reaction

Indians otoh are not looking for friendship nor enemity, nor peace nor war. Pakistan is off the radar for most of the Indians.

On subject of equality

We don't say treat us as a power yet India has played a pivotal role in all important global decisions - WTO, Climate Change, Economic Crisis, Dollar crisis, Nuclear energy, Afpak, Terrorism.

Well Pakistan did try to turn away from India after 1971, by trying to become a West Asian country. It organized the Islamic conference and tried to turn its back to India.

Didn't work out. No Islamic country agreed that Pakistan is a West Asian or Arab country.

Laut ke buddhu ghar ko aaye, finally.

Vinod,

i tend to believe a pakistani still cant come to terms with a hindu and a muslim coexisting peacefully so each time a thackeray spits venom they get all excited and make no bones about such an existence as a fallacy and like thackeray want to speak on behalf of an indian muslim but when a apj abdul kalam becomes the president or a mohammad hamid ansari becomes the vice president or a najma abdullha becomes the deputy speaker or a azim premji happens to be the richest muslim or a shah rukh or a amir or slaman or a saif make it to the top in bollywood in a country where 80(+)% population is hindu they care less and pretend as if nothing of the sort happened and when a aman ki asha happens they confront it, and this has to have roots in the false notions that they have been fed on over the years about a hindu who is nothing but the enemy of a muslim and of islam.

then comes the issue of reason why pakistan was formed, and one senses they have still not got over with that a majority of subcontinent muslims are no more a part of pakistan for which in the first place pakistan was formed and they see india as a culprit in that since the notion that a west pakistani muslim committing genocide and atrocities on a fellow muslim in east pakistan cant be imagined because the utopian impression remains a muslim cant do anything wrong to another muslim, though no matter how many times they might face similar situations of a muslim doing absolutely wrong to another muslim in day-to-day life.

then pakistan has been taken to ride for a number of years by their ruling elite be it the political class or the armed forces or the bureaucracy or the business community who have all traded the interests of the nation for their petty gains and have allowed outside forces be it the us or the ksa or the prc to use pakistan to further their interests through pakistan.

so what one gets is a cocktail of a lot of inherent fears which take a toll on the judgment of an individual and in this case of a nation and all that leads to a lot of confrontation from with in and in one such confrontation a thing like aman ki asha has to be confronted by tooth and nail and if not done then they are subjecting to an indian conspirasy hatched to do away with a nation called pakistan, any wonder why a good 32% of the pakistanis want a certain zaid hamid as their next president only next to musharraf who gets 34% pakistanis interested.

I agree Ritesh. This enormous focus on the likes of Shiv Sena and the riots than may have happened decades back and that have nothing to do with the obvious reality of Indian Muslims doing better than their Pakistani equivalents still makes some people feel insecure about the very basis of their country.

Pakistan is a reality now and should be able to come to terms with facts. TNT being "right" or "wrong" shouldn't matter now. But our friendly neighbors are not people you can accuse of really being objective.
