Pakistan Tests Nuke-Capable Missile
Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011
Pakistan said it today conducted a successful test-launch of a cruise missile that could carry a nuclear warhead, Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported (see GSN, Dec. 21, 2010).
The Hatf 7 cruise missile, also known as Babur, was launched from a secret location, military spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas said.
"Babur, which can carry strategic and conventional warheads, has stealth capabilities, is a low-flying, terrain-hugging missile with high maneuverability, pinpoint accuracy and radar avoidance features," the spokesman said. The missile can travel up to 373 miles.
Nuclear-armed rivals Pakistan and India regularly carry out missile tests with the other in mind.
Islamabad tested its medium-range, nuclear ready Hatf 5 ballistic missile in December. That weapon can travel up to 808 miles, DPA reported (Deutsche Presse-Agentur/Sify.com, Feb. 10).
