India would wipe off Pakistan at the cost of 500 mn people

Tuesday, 29 Sep, 2009 | 10:36 PM PST |

NEW YORK: In the events of the Indo-Pak nuclear war, India will emerge as the ultimate winner after wiping off Pakistan but lose up to 500 million of its own people, a book on former US President Bill Clinton's presidential years has claimed.

Pulitzer Prize-Winning author and historian, Taylor Branch, claimed that the Indian leaders had portrayed such a scenario in the events of an Indo-Pak nuclear war (during the Kargil conflict in 1999) to the then US President Clinton.

The portion on nuclear warfare appears in the chapter titled ‘Eight Missiles in Baghdad’, in which the author claims that Clinton told him that New Delhi would nuke Pakistan annihilating the entire country, if anyone in Islamabad triggered the nuclear bombs against it.

‘The president first scribbled a note to himself that Strobb Talbott owed him a report on his recent trip to South Asia,’ Branch writes in his 700-page book ‘The Clinton Tapes: Wrestling History with the President’, referring to the taped conversations he had with Clinton in the White House.

Talbott, now president of the Brookings Institute, served under the Clinton Administration during 1993-2001.

The book, which hit the stores today, has claimed to give an insight into the eight years of Clinton's presidency, which has not been heard before.

‘He called this the one region on the globe facing a serious threat of nuclear war between two nations, India and Pakistan. Their mutual enmity was historically constant, yet chillingly erratic,’ Branch writes, reported the Press Trust of India (PTI).

‘In private, he (Clinton) disclosed, Indian officials spoke of knowing roughly how many nuclear bombs the Pakistanis possessed, from which they calculated that a doomsday nuclear volley would kill 300 to 500 million Indians while wiping out all 120 million Pakistanis. The Indians would thus claim ‘victory’ on the strength of several hundred million countrymen they figured would be left over,’ he writes.

‘But on the other side, the Pakistanis insisted that their rugged mountain terrain would shield more survivors than the exposed plains of India. ‘They really talk that way,’ Clinton sighed. ‘We have bad relations with both of them,’ he continued.

Based on the series of conversations he had with Clinton during his presidential years, Branch says: ‘Locked in their arms race, India was furious that the United States had agreed to sell F-16 fighter planes to Pakistan, and Pakistan was no less enraged that the United States refused to deliver the planes years after receiving the payment.’

Such transfers remained blocked since 1990 under the Pressler Amendment, which prohibited military sales to any country found to be developing nuclear weapons in violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

‘Even worse for the Pakistanis, said Clinton, the US law obliged his administration to collect storage payments from Pakistan on its impounded F-16s gathering rust in American custody,’ Branch said.

‘The president hoped to devise a rebate or remedy for these grossly unfair charges, which he called a diplomatic insult, but he saw no cure for the larger strategic impasse over South Asia,’ he said.

Clinton said the United States was trying to hold the line on a treaty that fed hostility and opportunism.

‘If we didn't try to enforce the ban on nuclear proliferation, plenty of countries would rush to sell the required technologies on our example,’ Clinton was quoted as saying.

‘As long as we did try, however, we would draw upon ourselves some of the extraordinary venom between India and Pakistan,’ Clinton was quoted.

Branch wrote, Clinton said this issue demanded persistence. ‘His impression was that Talbott's trip turned up little of promise, but he wanted the details,’ the book said. –Online

This article is for those in Pakistan or elsewhere who want to hold India ransom by nuclear blackmail. Even at massive loss of 500mn people (though I would say 50mn would be right figure), India is willing to wipe-off Pakistan if it keeps on supporting terrorism in India.

See the report based on analysis of 1999. Kiddo things have moved on since then. Believe me there wont be many dhotis left over by the time Pakistan is through with India. Why do you think they desisited after having prepared the whole drama of the Mumbai carnage. If they could have done it they wuld have done it. Dont wish for something that you cant bear to see yourself, as in those 500 million people would be your near and dear ones as well as mine. So stop being silly and egoistic and think realistic. Also dont come back with the retort of "so you support terrorism against India"as I dont. There is a game being played in the region and both the countries are its eventual target . No sense in having a situation where you have to lose your whole infrastructure to wipe off the enemy and not be able to live on your land for 500yrs as it would be so polluted that anyone living on it would die a slow and painful death

Mostly because of US hand wringing India because of the role of Pakistan in WoT. They feared no one will be left to fight taliban.

I didn't wish this and will not wish either. This article is an answer to those who keep on taunting India that it cannot attack Pakistan because of its nuclear weapons. This should knock sense into such people and make them think realistically of what they can do with India and what they shouldn't do to India.

Game that kills innocent citizens because of state sponsored terrorism. You may not be doing it at individual level but your establishment is doing. Many here support terrorism in Kashmir and its an open secret.

Exactly. No sense in sponsoring terrorism and killing innocent citizens and asking for a war which will eventually lead to nuclear war. Mind you, India still has NFU policy. So, we will not be the ones who will trigger a nuclear war. So, ball is in Pakistan's court as far as nuclear war is concerned. India would be happy with a conventional war if such need arises out because of Pakistan's belligerence in the future covertly or overtly.

kiddo - you are absolutly right - the situation has changed but it has gone in india's favour -

1. now we have a better understanding and diplomatic ties. with other countries speciafically americans.

2, pakistan is in bigger poltical termoil.

3. pakistan has bigger problem from taleban -

4. indian defence have climbed a few notch up - faster pace than - pakistan's .

5. indian public is loosing its brain - against terrorism - there is a big sayign going on - ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

6. india have no first use policy - sorry to burst your bubble - but if pakistan used its nuke first - it will take a few moments to make some - crates over there.

7. first use of nuke will make pakistan - on enemy radar. for whole world.

8. in case of war india have way bigger infrastructure to - use all of its production line diverted to defence.

9. india have many defence partner - in case of war scenario we can - store and invest in war more weapons , before the war.

10 once it come to war - if whole mullah brigade will come to pakistan - remeber - whole india becomes one too. not just inside but overseas as well.

------------------------------------------------------

althought - i am strongly against - the notion of nuke war .

if this artical hold even 10% of base then i think - indian and pakistani are in real trouble. because a bunch of politicans have already calculated it all.

but i seen many pakistani raving about - nuke war . if it keep going like this

- a bunch of nuke ego pakistani + a bunch of war mongering indian + idiot media . = nuclear war wipe off the planet .

---------- a nuke war will surely put india - in big problem- india will go far behind , but then again india is screwed up by poverty and hunger anyways. ------ and all this cost for what ???????? peace forever ?????? - is it possible ????? --- may be some selfish poltical bodies of india might be thinkign on those lines-----------------

----x-x-x-x-x-x-

personally - my own stand point is - not a single human life is worth loosing on either sideo f border.
and a peace can not exist on the land of grave.
----o-o-o-o-
but then again who the hell i am ????? in past few months of these defense bloggin i realised there are many idiots on both side of barbwire who want a nuke war- and those are people who really deserved to melt away.
-----=--=-=-=-=-~-~-
so this goes out to all those indian war monger - if you think 500 mln life are worth it - i really hope your number comes in early hundrads.

and those paksitani who think - indian dhoti can be lost - with their nuke - dude - just wait n watch - dont think indian people are so damn intelligent - that they wont go for a war. you hold your beard alright !!!!!

Well the Indian pakistani conflict algorithm goes like this...

Pakistan wants Kashmir -> India will not give it to Pakistan -> Pakistan cannot win Kashmir militarily -> So, Pakistan supports terrorism in Kashmir and India in the hope that India will relent and give it the Kashmir -> India has not relented despite many terrorist attacks by pakistan sponsored terrorists (Parliament attack, Akshardam attack, Mumbai 26/11 attacks etc) -> Pakistan will try more such terrorist attacks -> India loses patience after some more attacks and under immense pressure from its people will attack terrorist camps across the border -> Pakistan will not take it down and will escalate the war and so will India -> A larger war ensues and due to India conventional quantitative military superiority it might lead to a nuclear war depending on whether Pakistan will press the nuclear button or not. -> ..........???

I don't see much change in above scenario unless Pakistan sheds sponsoring terrorism in India or India give kashmir to pakistan. I don't see any of the above happening, so the above scenario still holds good.

None of these attacks were Pakistan sponsored or have proven to be sanctioned by any government body or individual in the government. Placing intelligence field agents in a hostile country and coordinating false flags on your own targets and leaving all the clues and footprints pointing to "Pakistani" involvement is a game we know Indians are good at. We have seen how barbaric and cruel they can be in Kashmir, and how they can twist the law or dissolve it at the same time, GoI has no morals or a heart.

Kashmir issue + stealing Bangladesh like thieves and war criminals = India has already since long signed it's own obituary at the hands of Pakistan. Now the question is will the payment come in the form of conventional or unconventional attack? Ask yourselves this question, so far Indians are on the aggressive side. Good luck ***holes.

Its not worth replying to your mental gymnastics here and this statement of yours clinches towards that opinion.
