Pakistan to get guided missile frigate from US WASHINGTON: Pakistan and United States has signed the contract for the transfer of the guided missile frigate USS McInerney here on Tuesday.

Capton Abdur Rehman, defence Procurement Attache signed the contract on behalf of Pakistan Navy.

The $ 65 million contract will enable Pakistan to take over USS McInerney at US Naval station Mayport, Florida on August 31 this year after which it will be commissioned as PNS AlAMGHIR.

A comprehensive refurbishment of the ship will be undertaken under the supervision of US Navy which will be completed in Jan. 2011.

Succesful culmination of this contarct will also pave way for acquisition of more vessels of same class for Pakistan navy to raise a squadron of 8 Perry Class Frigates. This will greatly enhance operational readiness of Pakistan navy.

USS McInerney was the second ship of the Oliver Hazard Perry class of guided-missile frigates and first US Navy ship named for US Vice Admiral Francis McInerney (18991956).

In September 2008 the US Congress had approved selling the frigate to Pakistan with a delivery date of August 2010.

Pakistan is considered a major non NATO Ally and is able to receive older unneeded US military equipment.

Additionally, the 32-year-old frigate will be given a 65 million dollar refurbishment including anti-submarine capability paid for with foreign military aid provided by the U.S to friendly countries.

Pakistan will pay $78 million for 30-year-old frigate.

Well!!! Someone has been hard at work!! On a more serious note ,8frigates of this class, refurbished by turkey on similar levels as they have upgraded theirs, would be a very potent force indeed
All that we now need is to sign on the dotted line to confirm U214s and the Navy would be happy for at least a decade

McInnerney acquired as 'PNS Alamgir': Pakistan signs $65 million contract with US

WASHINGTON (April 21 2010): Pakistan and the United States signed a $65 million contract on Tuesday for 'hot transfer' of USS McInnerney frigate, enabling Pakistan Navy to take over the vessel on August 31 this year.

The frigate will be commissioned as PNS Alamgir at a ceremony on August 31 in the United States and a comprehensive refurbishment of the ship, in line with Pakistan Navy's requirements, will be undertaken under the supervision of US Navy. Upon completion of refurbishment work in January 2011, PNS Alamgir will sail to Pakistan to join Pakistan Navy Fleet.

At Tuesday's ceremony, officials from Pakistan Navy and the Pakistan embassy in Washington represented the government of Pakistan and senior ranking US Navy officials represented the United States of America. Pakistani embassy officials described the occasion a major milestone towards further strengthening wide-ranging Pak-US relationship.

"The successful completion of this contract will also pave the way for acquisition of more vessels of the same class for Pakistan Navy to raise a squadron of 8 Perry Class Frigates," the officials said. "This will greatly enhance operational readiness of Pakistan Navy," the officials noted. The US Congress approved selling the frigate to Pakistan, a major non-Nato ally, in September 2008.

Pakistan getting US missile frigate for free?

April 27, 2010

Click the image to open in full size.

Pakistan Navy has rebuked reports that it is acquiring an over 30-year-old guided missile frigate from the United States for a whopping $64.77 million, saying that the country would be getting the warship free of cost.

A Pakistan Navy spokesman said that the transfer of USS McInerney, an Oliver Perry class frigate, is being done under the Foreign Military Funding, according to which Pakistan would 'not have to pay a single dollar for the frigate.'

The naval frigate will be handed over to Pakistan on August 31 following which it would be refurbished according to the Pakistan Navy's requirements under the US Navy's supervision.

USS McInerney, which would be called PNS Alamgir after Pakistan's acquisition, is likely to start its journey to Pakistan in January 2011 to join the Pakistan Navy.

It is worth mentioning here that Islamabad [ Images ] is negotiating with Washington for five more Oliver Perry class frigates.

Sources in the Pakistan Navy said that the frigate is actually a gift from the US and will fly the Pakistani flag as a cost-efficient "hot-transfer".

However, the US Defence Security Department through a notification to the Congress had clarified that the frigate along with its equipments, parts and logistical support will be worth at least $78 million.

USS McInerney is equipped with anti-submarine missile defence system, surface-to-surface missiles, and with helicopter deck landing facilities.

Why are we making a mountain out of a mole hill? Yes they will cost 78 million to refurbish prior to transfer, but this money will come out of the the Aid that the US is giving to us. We seem to be nit picking without realizing the factsand the media seems to have no sense relating to military matters.

Honorable Araz rediff is hardly a news source, its propoganda machine spewing hate and jingoistic tones, what they say should be looked with care.

United States Navy and Pakistan Navy Agree to Ship Transfer

Pakistan Committing to Fund Transfer for USS McInerney (FFG-8)

ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 05, 2010

VSE Corporation recently hosted a meeting between the United States and Pakistan Navies to solidify an agreement for the transfer of the USS McInerney, which is scheduled to be decommissioned this summer.

Pakistan Navy Captain Abdul Rehman signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance to initiate the ship transfer. Captain Rehman is assigned to the Embassy of Pakistan as Attache for Defense Procurement (Air Force/Navy). U.S. Navy Captain Chris Pietras represented the Naval Sea Systems Command in accepting the offer.

For VSE's Naval Ship Transfer and Repair Team, the agreement translates into a contract covering training responsibilities. VSE will support U.S. Navy training of the 248 Pakistani crew members, beginning this month, until the ship is officially transferred around the end of August. In the near future, VSE will develop a work package for approval by the Pakistan Navy. After the transfer, VSE will manage a shipyard industrial availability contract to make ship repairs that will extend its life. During the availability the VSE's Ship Training and Assistance Team (STAT) will provide hands on maintenance and operational training for the Pakistan crew.

In January 2011, the VSE STAT is scheduled to conduct underway training for the crew, with a final evaluation by the U.S. Navy Afloat Training Group on the ability of the Pakistan crew to operate the ship and equipment in a safe-to-sail manner. Afterwards, the crew will sail the ship home to Karachi, Pakistan. A small contingent of the VSE Transfer Assistance Team personnel will accompany the ship and provide additional underway training.

VSE CEO Maurice "Mo" Gauthier said, "Together, with our customers and the highly experienced and competent team we have assembled, we are confident that we will meet and exceed the requirements of this allied mission. We look forward to the challenge."

"Our expertise with training, equipment repair, and working in tandem with both the U.S. and Pakistan Navies will be a rewarding experience and great collaborative opportunity," added Mike Hamerly, President of International Group.
