Has Rahat Fateh Ali Khan learned his lesson?
Has Rahat Fateh Ali Khan learned his lesson?
13 February 2011
According to Bharati offcials, Rahat Fateh Ali was formally arrested and he would be produced in court today (Monday). He was shifted to revenue office. The detention of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, heir to the legacy of legendary singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, spread like wildfire in Pakistan and was the lead story in almost all Pakistani TV channels in their prime time bulletins. According to press reports Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was arrested in Delhi for attempting to take one 100,000 Dollars cash to Pakistan. He had earned this one in his concerts. Media reports inform us that the Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik Sunday has directed the country’s High Commissioner in India to extend consular support to singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Khan was detained at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on charges of carrying undisclosed money.
We met Rahat Fateh Ali Khan at an exclusive gathering in the US. At the time this scion of the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was not very popular and was a struggling artist trying to claw up the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s throne. What surprised me, was that at the end of the private gathering, he began complaining about his penury and was in awe of the Bharati establishment and opportunities presented in Bharat. Several years later, I met him again in the US this time at a rather large concert. He went the same route. Obvioiusly his “dallar kee talash” has taken him across the borer just like Adnan Sami Khan and Shakeel the comedian. The Dollars he earned in Delhi has now put him in trouble with the law–pretty soon the Hindu Mahasabah will jump into the picture and begin opposing him.
The Saffron Brigade had actually pulled Shakkel off the stage and told him to leave Bharat. The vendetta against Adnan Sami Khan was ore subtle–but in the end he had to leave without his property and without his money.
These are the fruits of “aman kee asha”.
The famous Ghazal and Qawwali musical traditions of the subcontinent have a long and rich legacy of talented Muslim artistes, including internationally acclaimed Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Several of his hit songs from Indian films are a rage on both sides of the border, for which he has won several awards, including the recent Filmfare award for ‘Dil to Bacha Hai Jee’from the movie Ishqiya. The 37-year-old, nephew of Pakistani singing legend Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, was earlier too involved in a controversy when organisers of a concert in Gurgaon filed a police complaint against him in July last year for his failure to turn up for a show.
Rahat’s brother-in-law, Asim Raza, told a local TV channel that they ‘received information from the media and were feeling concerned about it’. ‘We are yet to establish any proper contact with the authorities in India although Rahat talked briefly with his wife and asked her to remain hopeful of a positive outcome’.
Rahat, part of the Khan family and the nephew of Nusrat, is popular both in all of South Asia, in India and Pakistan, and in the South Asian diaspora around the world.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan charged under FEMA
NEW DELHI: Pakistani sufi singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and his manager Maroof on Saturday were charged under the FEMA and Customs Act.
Rahat was questioned by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials (DRI) for allegedly carrying USD 1.24 lakh (about Rs 60 lakh) of undeclared foreign currency.
DRI officials again quizzed Rahat today. The sufi singer was detained on February 13 at Indira Gandhi International Airport .
Besides Rahat, his manager Maroof, owner of an event management company Chitresh Shrivastava, and two employees of Mumbai-based Foreign Exchange firm were detained and have been questioned at length about the source of the money.
Rahat was detained when he, along with his 16-member troupe, was on his way to Lahore via Dubai.
Soon after their detention, searches were conducted simultaneously on the premises of "Eyeline Telefilm and Events" in Mumbai, owned by Chitresh, elder brother of bollywood singer Aadesh Shrivastava.
Sources privy to the investigations claimed that the sleuths found Rs 51 lakh in cash which was seized besides some documents.
As per norms, no one can carry beyond USD 5,000 in cash and USD 5,000 in other instruments. The person has to declare the amount if he is carrying more than this to the Customs Department.
Meanwhile, authorities here have extended singer's visa to 10 more days after its expiry on February 14, sources said.
Khan is rated as a one of the top playback singer of Hindi film industry who has several hit numbers to his credit. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer this year for 'Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji' from the movie 'Ishqiya'.

Re: Has Rahat Fateh Ali Khan learned his lesson?
I hope he has learned his lessons and doesn't try anything illegal again.
I am glad India is still maintaining its open door policy to some extent in this atmosphere of mutual distrust. We should continue to allow some talented individuals of whatever nationality to work for the Indian film industry. Only we should make sure they don't turn back on us like that Begum.

Well, the positions have hardened more after 26/11 and the way Pakistan allows that scum Haffiz saeed open. Those who are asking that no Pakistanis be allowed to earn money in India while Pakistan sponsors such terrorists are not unjustified.
But the fact is that as of now, some Pakistanis are indeed being allowed.
One more reason would be the attitude of Pakistani media and those people who were allowed in India and made money. They start punching hole in the thali pretty soon.
This was not the only example of that Jehaniyat.
After this, I don't favor any Pakistani cricketers in IPL.
Shahid Afridi supposedly talked very cheaply about Indian women, I don't want him within a thousand miles of India. Same goes for Imran Khan.
All these people flock to India to make money and get respectability and pay back in the only way they know.

Re: Has Rahat Fateh Ali Khan learned his lesson?
Lahore, Feb 16 (IANS) The performing arts council in Lahore has decided to ban all song and dance performances based on Indian films because of the presence of 'vulgarity' in them and to promote only classical dances in Pakistani theatre.
The decision of the Lahore Arts Council (LAC) has, however, infuriated producers and artistes who believe the council was trying to damage their business, the Express Tribune reported.
The decision was made to facilitate quality theatre, a council spokesperson said.
Chaudhary Zulfiqar Ahmad, chairman of the Commercial Theatre Producers' Association, said: 'How many films are made in Pakistan annually? From the handful that are made, how many have songs that we can use in our plays?'
'If we don't have performances on Indian songs, and cannot include any dance performances other than classical dance, then what are we left with,' he said.
'Some artistes and producers don't follow certain moral standards when including dance performances in their plays, they should be banned - not the dances.'
'Only a limited section of the audience appreciates classical dances, while large numbers of theatregoers have little or no interest in such performances. This ban will have major financial repercussions on commercial theatre,' Ahmad said.
Suggesting a remedy to the 'vulgarity' in commercial theatre, he said the council should strictly censor the scripts and not impose a ban.
'The script of a play is first approved by the LAC and the Punjab Arts Council and only then it is sent to the home department for clearance. Writers on the panel of the council approve the scripts,' he said.
Each submitted script mentions the dance performances included in a play. If the council has objections to any performance, it should censor that, instead of banning all dances featuring Indian songs, he opined.
'As far as Indian songs are concerned, many of them are now sung by Pakistani singers and are popular here. If we can allow them in the form of CDs, DVDs and screen them in our cinemas, why can't we include them in our stage plays,' asked another producer on the condition of anonymity.
On the other hand, popular Pakistani artistes like Samina Ahmad and Usman Peerzada are supporting the ban on Bollywood dance performances.
'Quite often, the dance performances in these commercial theatre productions are vulgar. The performances have no theme or relevance. It's better to ban such plays in their entirety instead of allowing them to have dances,' Peerzada said.

Re: Has Rahat Fateh Ali Khan learned his lesson?
^^ On the one hand Indian movies, songs and TV serials are hughly popular in Pakistan, almost as mainstream as in India. They are the only source of entertainment in the life of many. Mostly it is stolen stuff with no money reaching the creative people who created it in the first place. So it is plain stealing and robbery.
A recent survey found that 4 in 5 Pakistanis wanted people's limbs to be chopped for stealing and stoning to death for apostacy and zina.
Here Pakistanis are using our cultural products and then blaming it for "vulgarity". Leaving aside the fact that the vulgarity if any is by the Pakistani dancers, just look at your own movies and dances.
The hypocrisy is breathtaking but just typical.
