In Chess, if two pawns from different sides end up facing each other they both are stuck. These two pawns can neither move forward nor backward. The game is then settled by other pieces which can move about.

Siachen is in such a situation. Neither Army can move forward and neither can withdraw. If there was any hopes of unilateral withdrawal or reducing armed presence, that ended with Kargil. Now the only way this issue will get solved is if Kashmir issue gets solved or if both agree on a line that each won't cross (and penalties for crossing them).

Well what about both of them going back where they belong?

I had this book (War above the clouds),unfortunately i lost it during shifting from one house to another. It was a very good book.

My father had served there back in mid 90s.

Might work, but I think political pressure in India will be pretty high, especially after Kargil. The belief is that a Gentleman's agreement to withdraw every winter existed in Kargil and this was broken by infiltrators from Pak side. It would be very difficult to convince that another agreement on Siachen would hold. (Once bitten twice shy etc.).

In the book, the story of the captain mentioning Allah holding the rope for his men was impressive.
