1962 - A Missed Opportunity?
1962 A Missed Opportunity?
I have long pondered one aspect of this era and that is the Sino-Indian Border-War during 1962 (relating to Pakistan).
Should Pakistan have attacked India during it's war with China?
There was a high chance that if Pakistan had attacked India during it's brutal and vicious fast war with China during 1962 C.E. which resulted in a major humiliation of the Indian nation and military, that Pakistan could have won a major decisive war, and ultimately captured the whole of Kashmir! This is my opinion.
Now let's keep in mind, India has to divide it's troops along two front's it's Northern and Western Front to confront China to the North and Pakistan to the West...This stretches and separates one's military, which can cause significant difficulty in war, because your troops are forced to divide (unfavorably).
Now the points I would like to make are these.
1)Pakistan should have attacked India during the 1962 C.E. Sino-Indian War. For India having to fight Pakistan and China both would be a War for her life, a war that would result in great economic, military, and political suffering and hardship...
Perhaps the pressure of fighting both Pakistan and China simultaneously would have forced India's hand to surrender...As soon as we have India in this weaker state we can make demands as India is in no position to deny or military refuse our wishes....Ultimately India would surrender it's occupied portion Kashmir, that is if the the Pakistan Army hadn't already captured it by it self during 1962.
2)If we had attacked India during the 1962 Sino-Indian War, the 1965 and most importantly 1971 "Bangladesh Liberation War" could have been AVERTED! This means Pakistan would still be united or in possession of what is now known as "Bangladesh" this would also mean Pakistan would have a Geo-Political edge over India during this decade and beyond (60's-90's)...Also India would be in little position to support insurgents like the Mukti Bahini later on in the early 70's...India would be more weary of the consequences of it's actions.
3)If there was any time in our history were defeating India was at it's easiest it was during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. The possibility of a significant victory against India at this time is high in my conjecture. Indian troops were already bogged down in the Northern Front spending men, resources, and losing territory and overall morale...This is very important point here...We should have taken advantage of this immediately "strike while the iron is hot..."
In my 3rd point, I want to make it clear I am not saying we needed to have an all out victory against India or even defeat a large portion of it's military. The truth is engaging India at that time would have expanded India's trouble, and eventually after weeks of war with both hostile Pakistan and China would force India to surrender! This would leave India vulnerable and as I said before in no position to defy or refuse us militarily...

Re: 1962 - A Missed Opportunity?
All the while assuming Indians fought the 1962 war on full strength? Indians lost, but Chinese retreated, not because Indians were winning, but Chinese logistics; Though IAF could have been used they didnt, why didnt they? It was India's war which was fucked up by the top leadership!
And History is History,India is here and now. They are happy with the status quo; and there is absolutely no chance of Indians being defeated now, especially by the Pakistani's, it hasnt happened before, it aint happening in the future.

So Bharat fought this 'war' without using her full stregth? Now why did Bharat do that, how does that make sense?
The reason why the IAF was not used, was because Nehru did not want to provoke the chinese further, and be the cause of an escalation. The Chinese were good enough not to advance south of their claim line, even though the Bharatis had abandoned many of their posts there.
Bharat should count her lucky stars, that the Pakistanis were persuaded by the Americans not to jump in and open a third front in Kashmir, something which the Chinese had urged Pakistan to do.
If our own leadership had got their heads out of their behinds, we wouldn't have the problem of Kashmir today, Pakistan would not have been divided, and Bharat/Pakistan would have had much frendlier relations, and avoided the following three wars.
Now that is hindsight, but it gives us a lesson. Next time, when there is an opportunity, Pakistan should seize it with both hands.

Read below for an in-depth discussion about the 1962 Sino-Indian War and the Geo-Politics that surround it...

According to Mr. Gauhar, Pakistan dared not to enter its troops in Indian Administered Kashmir because:
There was a secret military pact signed between the USA and the India according to which USA were to help India if India was in the state of complete defeat in the hands of Chinese.
President Canady's regime had warned Pakistan not to take advantage of the NEFA situation and not to open up another front for the Indians.
According to Mr. Gauhar, had Pakistan had entered its troops in IAK, US bombers were soon to be seen in the Pakistani Skies.
That is all I know, and from Mr. Gauhar's book. Even though I was never able to confirm this ‘secret India-US defense pact’ of 1962 but it is also true that Indians call for assistance was answered by an outpouring of arms from Britain and the U.S.

Interesting information, it appears India has been a pawn of the US since the early 60's to contain China, the strategy continues today.
It was only until the 70's when the Cold War was heating up that Pres. Richard Nixon provided Pakistan with special treatment, as India had allied itself with the Soviet Union. In fact, Nixon worked with China and Pakistan both to deal with the 1971 war, he encouraged China to provide Pakistan weapons and replenish war supplies. I believe there was talk of opening up a second front in 1971 as well. The Richard Nixon Presidency was very kind to Pakistan.
Anyways back to 1962, at first it sounds ridiculous of the secret US-Indo defense agreement, though when one really settles down and realizes this is quite possibly true. In fact, I think I once heard of this secret alliance that the UK-US supported India in the Sino-Indian war, and after the war was over in defeat for India, the two Anglo-Saxon powers rushed to India's aid.
The policy of containing China is no recent phenomenon but a well long coordinated strategy by the US/UK powers.
This is one reason why Western Powers openly encourage India to become a permanent member of the UNSC...
Though now we must ask ourselves, do we call the US's bluff that if we attack India during 1962 their bombers would be over our skies? One thing for certain is we cannot continue to be dictated by threats and fears.

Re: 1962 - A Missed Opportunity?
Also let me make one very hard-hitting crucial point to why Pakistan may have not interfered.
In 1962 there was no Sino-Pakistani alliance or friendship. Both Pakistan and China were strangers to one another, neither countries understood one another, or knew where the other countries loyalties lie, there was no military coordination or really diplomatic connection between China and Pakistan.
Our friendship subsequently began in 1963, when Pakistan ceded Aksai Chin, the northern most uninhabited part of Kashmir. In return China happily accepted Pakistan's claim to the world famous K-2 Mountain. The began our alliance.
It is highly likely if a Sino-Pakistani alliance had existed prior to the 1962 Sino-Indian war, Pakistan would have also taken some sort of military action to undermine India.

Because that kind of idiot was our leaders at the time, its rather wasteful debating with you, because you dont know who V.K.Krishna Menon was, nor his history, nor do you fully understand the concept behind Nehru's naiveness.

In 1962, Indians were a far better force, why check WW 2. Chinese couldnt use the Airforce, because high altitudes. Indians were idiots in that war, no doubt.

Pakistan should be glad that Indians didnt continue after 1971 onward to the west pakistan dismember it further, after they have pressurised by Americans.

There is absolutely no way Pakistan and India will ever have good relations. Pakistan isnt just worth the trouble.

Adux get your head out of that silly frock mate, when an Indian says glass bowl you can't help but to think of all the empty glass bowls in the slums of India...first ask your government to fill them up for the starving, then commence having wet dreams about attacking Pakistan and China.
