Tel Aviv - The Israeli navy on Tuesday intercepted a cargo ship loaded with weapons that was heading from Turkey to Egypt, the military said.
The ship is owned by a German company, an army spokeswoman in Tel Aviv told the German Press Agency dpa. The shipping company operating it is French, she said.
“Israel is a regime made of lie, making lies and fabrications,” Major-General Ataollah Salehi told IRNA.
Israel said that according to its assessments, the weapons on board were meant for militant factions in the Gaza Strip.
'The IDF (Israel Defence Forces) would like to note that Turkey is not tied to the incident in any way,' a statement released by the military said.
The Victoria, sailing under a Liberian flag from Mersin in Turkey to Alexandria in Egypt, was intercepted in the Mediterranean some 200 miles west of Israel's coast, according to the statement.
It noted that the vessel was spotted as part of the navy's 'routine activity' to prevent arms smuggling to Gaza and followed a 'security assessment.'
The Israeli troops that boarded the ship met with no resistance from the crew, the statement said.
The vessel was taken to an Israeli port for further searches and a detailed inspection of its cargo.
German, Liberian and French authorities have all been notified of the ship's interception.
