Arab League condemns Israeli 'crime' against flotilla

DOHA (May 31, 2010): Arab League chief Amr Mussa slammed a deadly Israeli military raid on Monday against a Gaza-bound aid boat as a ‘crime’ and called a meeting of the 22-country organisation about the attack.

"We condemn this crime, taken against a humanitarian mission and people. They were trying to help people. They were not on a military mission. Everyone should condemn this," Mussa told AFP.

Speaking later on the sidelines of a World Economic Forum summit in Doha, Qatar, Mussa said he had called a meeting of the Arab League council to be held on Tuesday.

"We are all very angry," Mussa said. "Tomorrow, there will be a collective position taken."

"This is another message, a very powerful message, that Israel does not want peace, is not ready to enter into peace. So everything we are doing is to no avail," he said.

Mussa said the Israeli action meant "everything" was now left "hanging in the air," including US-brokered proximity talks that only started on May 9 between the Jewish state and the Palestinians.

He added that "lifting the siege (on Gaza) should be part of any confidence-building measures, any preparation for a successful round of proximity talks."

Israel has maintained a crippling blockade on Gaza since Hamas seized power in the impoverished, overcrowded Palestinian territory in 2007.

Pro-Palestinian activists have landed with aid in Gaza five times, with another three attempts unsuccessful since their first such sea voyage in August 2008.

At least 10 people died when Israeli forces stormed a flotilla of aid-carrying ships bound for Gaza in a dawn raid in international waters off the northern Israeli port city of Haifa, according to the Israeli military.

A Turkish charity involved with the fleet put the toll at at least 15 dead.

The bloody ending to the high-profile mission to deliver supplies to the besieged Gaza Strip plunged Israel into a diplomatic crisis on the eve of a meeting in Washington between President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

20 dead as Israel forces storm Freedom Flotilla

GAZA CITY (May 31, 2010): At least 20 passengers have been reported dead and over 60 wounded on Monday when Israeli forces stormed Freedom Flotilla (a boat carrying pro-Palestinian activists bound for Gaza), Aaj News reported. Executive Director Aaj News Talat Hussain along with his team members is onboard, whose where about could not be known.

AFP: Unconfirmed media reports from Hamas's Al Aqsa television said up to 20 passengers had been killed, of whom nine were Turkish nationals.

Media reports also said that senior Arab Israeli leader Raed Salah had been severely injured in the clashes, in which Gaza-based Hamas TV station said up to 20 people were killed.

According to Israel's private channel 10 television, Israeli marine commandos had opened fire after being attacked with axes and knives by a number of the passengers on board the aid ships, the television said, without giving the source of its information.

Israel's army radio said between 10 and 14 people had been killed in clashes which broke out after the passengers allegedly tried to grab weapons off the naval commandos who tried to storm one of the boats.

It was not clear whether the clashes took place on just one of the six boats making up the aid convoy.

Police said Israeli security forces were put on high alert to handle any "possible disturbances" among the country's Arab Israeli population in the wake of the deadly naval raid.

Turkey's foreign ministry warned that the raid on the Flotilla, which included Turkish vessels, may lead to "irreparable consequences" in bilateral ties.

"We strongly condemn these inhumane practices of Israel," a written statement said.

"This deplorable incident, which took place in open seas and constitutes a fragrant breach of international law, may lead to irreparable consequences in our bilateral relations," it said.

The Islamist Hamas movement which controls the Gaza Strip on Monday urged Arabs and Muslims to "rise up" in front of Israeli embassies across the globe in protest against Israel's deadly raid.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas slammed the killings as "a massacre", while Arab League chief Amr Mussa said the raid was a "crime" against a humanitarian mission.

The Israeli military censor ordered a block on all information regarding those injured or killed during the storming of the ship.

Gaza's Al-Aqsa television showed footage of black-clad Israeli commandos descending from helicopters and clashing with activists, as well as several wounded people lying on the deck of the ship.

The ships, carrying more than 700 passengers, were on the last leg of an aid mission to deliver some 10,000 tonnes of supplies to Gaza, which has been under a crippling Israeli blockade since 2007.

Hamas reacted angrily to the deadly raid.

"We call on all Arabs and Muslims to rise up in front of Zionist embassies across the whole world," said Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri, using the Arabic word 'intifada'.

Ismail Haniya, the Islamist movement's prime minister in Gaza, slammed the "ugly attack" in a statement in which he called for "the United Nations to protect the activists" on board the boats.

The boats had started heading towards Gaza from international waters of Cyprus at 3:00pm (1200 GMT) Sunday, with organisers saying they hoped to enter Gaza waters during the daylight hours.

About six hours after their departure, three Israeli missile boats left their naval base in the northern coastal city of Haifa on a mission to intercept the flotilla, reporters on board one of the vessels said before being told to turn off their phones.

Israel had at the weekend slammed as "illegal" the convoy's attempt to break the Gaza blockade and warned it would intercept the ships, tow them to the Ashdod port and detain the activists before seeking to deport them.

It labelled the convoy a media stunt, insisting the humanitarian situation is stable in Gaza despite reports to the contrary from aid agencies and offering to deliver the supplies through its own land crossings.

"This is a provocation intended to delegitimise Israel," Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said on Saturday.

Pakistan condemns Israeli attack on Freedom Flotilla

ISLAMABAD (May 31, 2010): Pakistan on Monday strongly condemned ‘the use of brazen force by Israel against a humanitarian Mission’ to deliver aid to the Palestinian people in Gaza.

"The killing of members of this humanitarian mission, which also included women, is brutal, inhuman and constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and norms," a statement by the Foreign Office said.

"The Government of Pakistan is seriously concerned over the well-being and whereabouts of the Pakistani citizens and famous anchor, media personnel and Aaj News Executive Director of News and Current Affair Syed Talat Hussain and Producer Raza Mahmood Agha who were on board the Flotilla bound for Gaza."

The statement said the Foreign Ministry was in constant touch with its Missions in the region to ascertain the well-being of Pakistani nationals.

Up to 19 dead as Israel storms Gaza aid ships

Turkey recalls ambassador from Israel Turkey recalls ambassador from Israel ASHDOD, Israel: Israeli naval forces stormed a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in international waters before dawn on Monday, killing up to 19 pro-Palestinian activists, most of them reportedly Turkish nationals.

The bloody ending to the high-profile mission to deliver supplies to the besieged Gaza Strip plunged Israel into a diplomatic crisis on the eve of talks between President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

As Israel pointed the finger of blame at passengers for initiating the violence, accusing them of using deadly force, activists from the ships countered with their own descriptions of how events unfolded in raid which took place in international waters at around 5:00 am.

Live footage taken from the Turkish passenger boat, which was posted all over the Internet, showed black-clad Israeli commandos rappelling down from helicopters and clashing with activists, as well as several wounded people lying on the deck of the ship.

“Under darkness of night, Israeli commandos dropped from a helicopter onto the Turkish passenger ship, Mavi Marmara, and began to shoot the moment their feet hit the deck,” according to a report on the website of the Free Gaza Movement.

The shaky footage shows scenes of chaos, with the dark profiles of Israel missile boats looming in the background.

Senior Pakistani journalist Talat Hussain, another Pakistani journalist Agha Raza and a Pakistani NGO worker were also on board one of the ships. So far, they had not made contact.

The Israeli army insisted its troops opened fire only after they were attacked with knives, clubs and even live fire.

“As a result of this life-threatening and violent activity, naval forces employed riot dispersal means, including live fire,” an army statement said, adding that it appeared as if the passengers “were planning to lynch the forces.”

Israel had a blunt response to the bloodshed, pinning the blame squarely on the activists.

“They initiated the violence,” Netanyahu's spokesman Mark Regev told AFP.

“We made every possible effort to avoid this incident.

“Unfortunately they were attacked with deadly force by the people on the boats — with iron bars, knives and live fire.”

Israel's Channel 10 TV said 19 passengers were killed and 36 wounded in the raid.

The army confirmed more than 10 people had died in the operation and said between 15 and 30 passengers were wounded.

Five naval commandos were also wounded, two of whom were said to be severely injured, while another three were in moderate condition.

A Turkish charity involved with the flotilla claimed at least 15 people were killed, most of them Turkish nationals.

As details of the bloody confrontation emerged, an Israeli military boat could be seen escorting a large white boat and a smaller yacht-type craft into the southern Israeli port of Ashdod, an AFP correspondent said.

Black-clad naval officers could be seen on the deck of the larger boat which appeared to be a passenger vessel, he said.

Media reports also said that senior Arab Israeli leader Raed Salah had been injured in the clashes.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas slammed the navy raid as “a massacre” and announced a three-day mourning period.

“We will have to take some difficult decisions this evening,” an official from his office told Palestinian television, without giving further details.

The Palestinian Authority also called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council “to discuss the piracy, the crime and the Israeli massacre,” said top negotiator Saeb Erakat.

Israel's Arab community called a general strike in response to an Israeli naval operation and called for protests across the country.

In response, hundreds from across the political spectrum flooded onto the streets of the northern Arab Israeli city of Nazareth to protest against the bloody attack.

Hamas reacted angrily to the raid.

“We call on the Palestinian Authority to halt negotiations, direct or indirect, with Israel because of this crime,” said Ismail Haniya, Hamas’ prime minister in Gaza.

The ships, carrying more than 700 passengers, were on the last leg of an aid mission to deliver some 10,000 tonnes of supplies to Gaza, which has been under a crippling Israeli blockade since 2007.

Israel had warned the attempt to break the Gaza blockade was illegal and that it would intercept the ships, tow them to the Ashdod port and detain the activists before deporting them.

It labelled the convoy a media stunt, insisting the humanitarian situation is stable in Gaza despite reports to the contrary from aid agencies.

Sure? You did pretty well in the other thread, one moment invoking humanity and the next moment threatening others that there is no one to rescue India from Muslims the next time.

The hypocrisy suggested you are not that bad a Muslim.

I can see you're badly mixed up - maybe too much Ganga Jal this time.

Now show me where and which thread I threatened, "there is no one to rescue India from Muslims the next time"

If you can't then I'm afraid I shall have to make you drink another COLA.

There is no hypocrisy in me - I'm consistent all along.
