ISLAMABAD - The Presidency has not only rebutted but also condemned what it termed baseless propaganda against President Asif Ali Zardari regarding his personal life.

Spokesperson of the President Farhatullah Babar has issued the following statement: “The Pakistan People’s Party deplores and condemns the launch of a vicious and unethical tirade on the net against Co-Chairman PPP President Asif Ali Zardari insinuating that the President had recently remarried secretly.

Monitoring Desk adds: Pakistan’s ambassador to US, Hussain Haqqani, has contradicted reports about marriage between Zardari and Dr Tanveer Zamani, a Pakistani doctor based in Boston.

“With due respect, this is utter nonsense”, said Ambassador Haqqani’s statement, forwarded by a friend to Wichaar.

Zardari marriage rumours: PPP demands apology

February 05, 2011 10:55 IST

Islamabad: In the face of the allegations that Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has married a US-based Pakistani doctor, Tanveer Zamani, the government is not taking it kindly and has demanded a retraction from the newspaper that published the alleged article.

The Pakistan government wants a retraction or an apology from Mark Seigal and the Jang newspaper regarding the same or else they will file a $100 million lawsuit and the money received in turn will be donated to flood victims.

The Pakistan President's office has not only rebutted but also condemned the report as baseless propaganda against Zaradri's personal life, The Nation reported on Friday.

The PPP deplored and condemned "the launch of a vicious and unethical tirade" on the Internet against its co-chairman", spokesperson of the president, Farhatullah Babar, was quoted as having said in a statement.

Pakistan's ambassador to US, Hussain Haqqani, has also denied reports about Zardari's remarriage with Tanveer Zamani, the Pakistani daily said.

"With due respect, this is utter nonsense," Haqqani said in a statement.

Another Pakistani newspaper, The News, said that the 40-year-old surgeon linked to the rumours, responded differently when approached for comments.

The Sindh Medical College graduate, who did her PhD in political science from Ireland in 1996 before moving to US, is of Mediterranean descent and reportedly lives in Manhattan, New York.

She is also a Democrat supporter who also participated in the 2008 US election campaign. She actively campaigned for President Barack Obama's health care reform bill.

According to The News, Zamani said she would not say anything but she had sought legal advice on how to handle the rumour.

"Personal matters are a very low priority. We have to handle the Egypt situation, the prices situation (in Pakistan), introduce Bilawal as the PPP leader, and many other issues. Personal issues come very low on my priority," she was quoted as saying.

There are a lot of people in our country who do not like President Zardari. He is the favorite punching bag and can be equated with “Amreeka of Pakistan”. From billion dollar deals to Rs. 500 bribes, everything can be associated with him. The matter of gullibility of our people is so mind boggling that they can believe anything that is told to them. A recent case being the “marriage of Asif Zardari”. One thing that people do not know about him or are not willing to believe is that he likes to consult a large number of people and believes in having “inclusive” management. By “inclusive” management it means, there are no one man decisions, contrary to what the media wants us to believe in. Had he been a one man show, he would have retained all the powers of 58-2B and others that Pervez Musharraf enjoyed as President.
