Pakistan clinch SA Games Hockey gold
LAHORE – Pakistan Whites hockey team won the gold medal of 11th South Asian Games hockey event after beating India on penalty strokes by 5-4 in the final match in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Sunday.
According to the information received from Dhaka, at the end of the first half India was leading by one goal to nil. Asheesh of India scored the goal on penalty corner. In the second half Pakistan’s Wasif Siddique leveled the goal on penalty corner. At full time the match remained 1-1 draw. In the extra time both of the teams did not succeed in scoring the golden goal. The match was decided on penalty strokes and finally Pakistan won the match by 5-4. Goal Keeper Imran Butt saved the last stroke. President Pakistan Hockey Federation Qasim Zia, Secretary Muhammad Asif Bajwa, Olympian Rana Mujahid Ali and members of the national selection committee congratulated the Pakistan team on this memorable victory.
Pakistan beat Nepal in thriller to grab bronze in T20 cricket
Pakistan tail-enders held their nerves under a tense situation to claim the bronze medal in T20 cricket of the 11th South Asian Games when they registered a narrow two-wicket victory over fighting Nepal at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Sunday.
Pradeep Airfe smashed a solid unbeaten 52 off 45 balls with four boundaries and one six and Gayandera Malla blasted 30 in 25 balls with two 4s and two 6s, as batting first, Nepal collected a competitive 147 for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs. Spinners Kamran Hussain and Nayyar Abbas took two wickets apiece.
Pakistan, in reply, cruised to victory with three balls remaining.
Pacer Junaid Khan hit his Nepal counter-part for a boundary and took two runs on the next ball to seal victory but not before the hiccups. Rameez Alam also scored a match winning unbeaten 33 in 29 balls with one boundary to steer his team to victory. Shoaib Khaliq hit a sparkling 30 in 20 balls, striking two boundaries.
Nepal opening bowler Chandra Saud caused much of the trouble in Pakistan batting by grabbing three wickets for 19 runs in a three-over spell.
