Default Pakistani players will not play in IPL 3: Modi

Pakistani players will not play in IPL 3: Modi

PTI 7 December 2009, 10:36pm IST

NEW DELHI: Pakistani players will not play in the Indian Premier League III as their board has failed to obtain their visas before the deadline

"We have been informed by PCB that they have not been able to obtain the visas as of now. So we are not being able to extend the deadline. Today is the absolute deadline for confirmation of Pakistani players (to take part in IPL). The exchange window is day after tomorrow," Modi said.

"Unfortunately, the Pakistani players are out and they will not be allowed to take part in the next IPL because we are handicapped by the fact that the exchange window is day after tomorrow. We are informing the teams that they now can go for the replacement of the Pakistani players," he said.

The Indian Premier League III will be played at various venues in the country in March-April.

IPL snubbed Pakistani players on flimsy grounds: Jillani

PTI 9 December 2009, 01:14pm IST

KARACHI: Miffed with the Indian Premier League's refusal to allow Pakistani players' participation for the second year in a row, Federal Minister for Sports Aftab Shah Jillani said the event's organisers have used "flimsy grounds" to "snub" his country's cricketers.

Jillani described the denial of permission to play in IPL III as an "insult" to Pakistan.

"If the IPL didn't want our players to take part in the tournament why did they bother to even ask the cricket board to furnish all government clearances for the players," Jillani said.

He said the sports ministry had worked overtime to get clearances from the foreign and interior ministries for the PCB.

"We did our part because we wanted our players to take part in the IPL this time. But I am afraid the way the IPL has snubbed our players on flimsy grounds is an insult to us," Jillani added.

He said it was about time, the Pakistan Cricket Board stopped "pandering to the Indian cricket authorities and showed more independence".

"I don't think we should be running after the Indian board or events now. Because they don't appear interested in responding likewise to us," the minister said.

IPL commissioner Lalit Modi announced on Monday that Pakistani players would not be able to take part in the next season of the league because the PCB had failed to get visas for them by the given deadline.

Modi said since the IPL has already twice extended the deadline for submitting all documents, there was nothing more he could do now.

Jillani said he couldn't understand how the PCB could arrange visas for the players when the IPL had not done anything to get a green signal from the Indian government.

"We want to normalise sporting ties with India that is why our ministry allowed our squash and table tennis teams to go to India this year because we don't believe in mixing sports with politics," he stated.

Pakistan's flamboyant allrounder Shahid Afridi, however, considers the non-participation of Pakistani players in the IPL as a blessing in disguise.

"It is disappointing that once again we can't play in the IPL but at the same time it also means that our players can now focus totally on the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies," Afridi said.

"Obviously we wanted to play in the IPL it is a major event but I just think maybe the Indians could have been more cooperative with us in given circumstances," added Afridi, who is Pakistan's T20 captain.

Afridi said not having Pakistani participation was not good for IPL either. "They could have done a bit more to ensure our participation in the event," he said.

Good decision in the end, afterall why fed the hands that try to kill you. The Pakistanis will have to beg for their inclusion in IPL-4. Great decision considering the sentiments of people in India.

Yes, there is no need for Pakistani players to come play IPL3 and that's what most Indians would want. But you have to see who is crying hoarse at this apparent snubbing by Modi .

He is not crying i think he is rightly trying to put the right thing in the heads of some of our pathetic cricket officials to avoid such Indian Notankis where even Sports(the most affective way to promote peace) is controlled by Terrorist like Modi. :)

He is crying that Pakistan got insulted because Pakistani players are not allowed to play in IPL.

Sports don't promote peace rather the people.

And I wonder why you would call Lalit Modi a terrorist. Inane logic can only be found in the brains of people like you.

Well, I personally would have liked them to play.

Some of them do add a dash of dynamism to the event and it is good for bilateral relations as well. It will surely spoil the fun for Pakistani cricket fans. For some people at least, it is nice to see Indian and Pakistani players paying together under the same colors.

It seems both sides were a little reluctant for that to happen. PCB didn't complete the formalities and IPL didn't extend the deadline. Not sure who was more keen on no Pakistani participaton!
