Default UK facing 'worst storm of year'

Heavy rain and high winds have caused flooding in parts of southern England, as the year's worst storm is forecast for the start of the weekend.

A severe flood warning is in place for Christchurch Harbour in Dorset, while there have been reports of flooding across southern England.
Winds in the south are due to peak at 80mph (129km/h) on Saturday morning.
The Met Office predicts a "brief respite" at the end of the weekend ahead of more storms next week.
In Haywards Heath, West Sussex, people had to be rescued from four units on an industrial estate after floods from about 2ft (60cm) of water.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service advised people to go up to the first floor of the premises.
"We have got one of our technical rescue units at the scene and they are going to be moving people out on boats. There are no reports of anyone being hurt," a service spokesman said.
Other developments include:
In west Cornwall, there are reports of water up to 2ft (61cm) deep making some roads impassable. Water is coming over the sea wall at West Promenade in Penzance, flooding the street, while in Padstow several properties are reported to have been affected by flash floods
Some SeaFrance crossings from Dover to Calais and LD Lines services to Boulogne suffered delays on Friday. A Port of Dover spokesman warned passengers to expect disruptions
Brittany Ferries has cancelled sailings from Plymouth to Roscoff and Poole to Cherbourg, although its services from Portsmouth to the French ports of Caen and St Malo are not affected
A windsurfer had to be rescued from "treacherous" conditions after getting into difficulty at Bigbury, near Kingsbridge in south Devon
Bennett Memorial Diocesan School in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, was closed because of flooding and sewage contamination
In Guernsey, an activity centre for dementia sufferers at Castel Hospital was closed after heavy rain caused a ceiling collapse
By 2130 GMT, the Environment Agency had issued one severe flood warning, along with 21 flood warnings - 18 in the South, two in the South West and one in Wales - as well as 87 lower "flood watch" alerts across England and Wales.
The agency and Met Office are warning people living along the coast in Hampshire, West Sussex, Dorset and South Wales of a risk of sea flooding this weekend, due to high tides, strong winds and significant wave heights.
Councillor David Sparks, of the Local Government Association, said: "People living by a river, coastal or flood risk area must be prepared.
"There are lots of precautions they can take. People should sign up to the Environment Agency's automated warning system, so they get a call the moment there is a risk their home could flood.
"People should also move all their valuables and irreplaceable items such as passports, certificates and wedding photos upstairs and out of the way."
The Met Office said it had recorded gusts of 78mph (125km/h) at Pembrey Sands in Carmarthenshire, while Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire had witnessed gusts of 68mph (109km/h).
Damage fears
Forecasts suggest there could be up to 75mm (3in) of rain on hills of Dartmoor, Exmoor and Wales, while much of the UK will see 25mm (1in).
BBC forecaster Tomasz Schafernaker said the weekend would have a "stormy first half" before quietening down.
The Highways Agency urged drivers to check travel information before setting out on Friday evening and into the night.
AA driving expert Mark Peacock said: "Even experienced drivers can be caught out, so it's important to drive more cautiously and allow extra time for your journey."
The high winds could cause damage to trees, railway lines and bridges. Air travel could also be disrupted.
The Met Office website warns: "At this stage, forecasts suggest that there may be a brief respite at the end of the weekend ahead of more unsettled weather into next week."

Just took my son for his entrance exams in South East London Kent border . We needed to park and walk for 5-7 minutes. It started pouring down and hailstones came hurling down. Both I and the Mrs, inspite of adequate coats were soaked to the skin. It was horrible.

I hope apart from the two of you getting soaked....nothing worse happened! (even getting soaked to the skin in this weather is really bad but I mean personal injury or loss in other way or form)

Like falling trees on cars and fly away sheds etc etc....

Four teenagers die in crash as storms batter Britain
Four teenage boys were killed in a car crash on Saturday as gale-force winds of up to 100mph battered parts of Britain.

The friends were travelling in a blue Rover which hit a garden wall in the Moseley area of Birmingham during heavy rain in the early hours of the morning.
Three of the dead were aged 15, 16 and 17. Police did not disclose the age of the fourth.
They were named locally as Hasni Ali, Hadi Suwef, his younger brother Kamal Suwef and Hamza Siraj, who were pupils at Hall Green Secondary School.
All died at the scene and a West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: “We have not established at this stage the cause of the crash, although obviously weather conditions were a factor.”
Colin Hall, 60, who lives near the scene, said: “It was raining so hard and there was so much water on the road. When I saw the wreckage it was horrendous, no-one could have survived it.
"It looked like the car had hit one side of the road and then just shot through the front wall of the garden. The car was torn apart.”
Friends visited the scene to pay tribute to the dead boys and lay flowers.
Raheen Karin, 16, said: “They will never be forgotten.”
Adnaan Khan, also 16, said: “Hasni was just caring and loving. He was always smiling and showed his love. He would always give you a hug whenever you saw him. I can’t believe it.”
The fatalities came as intense weather conditions in Wales and southern England led to flooding and heavy seas.
A supply craft from a North Sea oil rig ran aground at Britain’s most easterly point on Friday night as the gales took hold.
Three men were rescued unhurt from the vessel by the local lifeboat after the craft became stuck on a disused jetty at Ness Point, in Lowestoft, Suffolk, an RNLI spokeswoman said. The damaged vessel became grounded on rocks after being abandoned but was later salvaged, she added.
On Saturday, the town was battered by a freak tornado which toppled a tree onto a car, trapping a woman motorist inside.
Noel Johnson, who witnessed the “twister”, said it lasted about 30 seconds.
“It suddenly went all dark and started to rain heavily. You could see the wind, it looked like a drill, swirling around. It was very frightening,” he added.
“I suddenly heard a bang and went outside and saw that a large tree had fallen on the car.”
The woman was freed from the car by firecrews and treated at hospital for minor injuries.
Police officers also reported damage to a number of houses and the tornado tore roof tiles and brickwork from the town’s Crown Hotel.
A second tornado was reported in Benfleet, Essex, which damaged 60 homes and a number of vehicles.
At Newhaven, in East Sussex, the impact of heavy seas saw dramatic waves tower over the harbour lighthouse.
The lighthouse at The Needles on the westernmost point of the Isle of Wight reported gusts of between 95mph and 100mph.
Trees and power lines were brought down in Somerset, a roof was blown off a property at Whipton in Devon, and in Dorset five people, including a pregnant woman and two small children, fled their car when it was enveloped by floodwater at Whitchurch Canonicorum, near Bridport.
In Wales, Pembrokeshire was the hardest hit with widespread flooding of the county’s road network leading to motorists becoming stranded in their vehicles. Unusually for November, there was thunder and lightning inland as far as London, although the Lord Mayor’s Show and other events continued despite the conditions.
All cross-Channel ferries from Dover were halted and the port closed on Saturday afternoon due to conditions, while Plymouth-Roscoff and Poole-Cherbourg sailings were also cancelled.
The rain and winds were forecast to ease by Sunday, but this week is expected to bring further heavy rainfall in parts.
