Musharraf's remarks confirm India's position: Govt

NEW DELHI: India on Wednesday officially reacted to former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's admission that Pakistan had trained terrorists and pushed them into Jammu and Kashmir, by saying that his assertions had only vindicated India's official position.

The government said this precisely was the reason for India insisting before the international community that Pakistan dismantle the terror infrastructure operating out of its territory.

``This is a widely accepted fact and General Musharraf's assertion only confirms the veracity of what we have been repeatedly saying over the years,'' said MEA spokesperson Vishnu Prakash.

``This is precisely why India has sought a firm and abiding commitment from Pakistan that it will not allow its territory and territory under its control to be used for the aiding and abetting of terrorist activity directed against India and for providing sanctuary to such terrorist groups,'' he added.

Reacting to Musharraf's remarks, BJP asked the government to factor the admission of the former Pakistan president about his country's involvement in cross-border terrorism while framing its policy towards the neighbour and put international pressure on Islamabad to end the proxy war. "The confession of Pervez Musharraf is a vindication of India's position and consistent with BJP stand that terrorism in India is basically cross-border terrorism sponsored by Pakistan," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

In an interview to German magazine `Der Spiegel', Musharraf said, "(Militant groups) were indeed formed. The government turned a blind eye because they wanted India to discuss Kashmir."

Javdekar said, "Just as our analysis on Ayodhya was vindicated by the court, our analysis on Pakistan's proxy war against India has been proved now," he added.

Though the Pakistan government has denied Musharraf's claims, the "cat is out of the bag. The denial is a formality while the confession is the reality," Javdekar said.

The principal Opposition alleged that Pakistan has sponsored terrorism in Kashmir and was behind the recent law and order problems in the Valley, including stone-pelting. Javdekar said one day the involvement of Pakistan in 26/11 Mumbai terror attack and funding of separatists and stone-pelters would also come out.
