New Delhi bans Indian Mujahideen
New Delhi bans Indian Mujahideen
NEW DELHI: India on Friday banned the Indian Mujahideen (IM), the terrorist group allegedly involved in serial bombings in New Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi and Bangalore, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
The Indian Mujahideen, which is described as a shadow outfit of banned Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), joins the list of 35 outlawed organisations after the Indian Home Ministry in its notification announced that the Indian Mujahideen and all its formations and front organisations were banned. The Indian Mujahideen is in the spotlight since 2005 after it carried out an alleged explosion in Varanasi and then claimed responsibility of the multiple bombings in Uttar Pradesh in 2007.
The outfit had not been banned earlier because of its name – which means fighters of freedom and justice—as the Indian Intelligence Bureau (IB) felt it was merely to mislead the investigating agencies. However, the IB later reported that activists of SIMI and Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI) had formed the Indian Mujahideen. Terror outfits try to distract investigation agencies by adopting new names and by the time the investigators manage to crack down on the exact organisation these shadow outfits have already planned their next attack, IB sources said.
