India developing sub-sonic 1,000-km cruise missile
NEW DELHI (April 13 2010): India is developing a sub-sonic cruise missile with a range of 1,000 kilometres, news reports said Sunday. The one-ton missile is to be called Nirbhay, which translates into Without Fear, VK Saraswat, chief of India's state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation, was quoted as saying by PTI news agency. Nirbhay would be part of India's indigenously developed missile defence system, he said.
Saraswat, however, added that to make the defence system effective India needed a to deploy space-based sensors for tracking enemy movements. "Unless we prepare ourselves for future space-based systems, security is going to be a major issue," Saraswat said. Since its independence in 1947, India has fought three wars with Pakistan and one with China.
