Default H&M, Wal-Mart Destroy Unsold Clothing

Amid the recession and the cold winter months, Cynthia Magnus made a shocking discovery at the H&M in Manhattan's Herald Square. It wasn't a sale on the season's hottest trends--it was garbage bags upon garbage bags of unsold merchandise, most of it slashed with razors to ensure that no one would ever wear or sell it, the New York Times reports.

"Gloves with the fingers cut off," Ms. Magnus said, reciting the inventory of ruined items. "Warm socks. Cute patent leather Mary Jane school shoes, maybe for fourth graders, with the instep cut up with a scissor. Men's jackets, slashed across the body and the arms. The puffy fiber fill was coming out in big white cotton balls." The jackets were tagged $59, $79 and $129.
And right around the corner from this particular H&M is a popular collection point for New York Cares' coat drive. The organization's spokeswoman Colleen Farrell told the Times, "We'd be glad to take unworn coats, and companies often send them to us."

While H&M's destroy-and-discard policy is a missed opportunity in this time of need, the fast fashion retailer isn't the only one to practice these extreme measures. Magnus also found bags full of clothes priced with Wal-Mart tags, and each item had a hole punched through it.

Melissa Hill, a spokeswoman for Wal-Mart told the Times that the company typically donates its unsold pieces to charity and would investigate why those bags was discarded.

thats how capitalist world works. US throws all its unwanted wheat in the sea.

if they give it to poor then their brand name will loose value

Thats true, a lot of stuff gets destroyed instead of being donated to poor countries in order to keep the international demand and prices up. US regularly destroyes excessive wheat stocks by dumping it in the ocean.

Lets not condemn them, we're not saints either. There's another suger crisis looming in Pakistan while there's no shortage in production. Stockpiling by landlords and some politicians occur regularily to boost prices. Its comon knowledge yet no action is taken against these criminals.

I agree. Greed is at the heart of the issue and it is not specific to one country or people.

I don't think I condemned a particular set of people. I think this system is bad but there are no perfect alternatives either. Mainly depends on the people involved.

Whoever said that????

There are various Laws against hoarding and black marketing implemented in Pakistan and Indai...... enacting/enforcing them is another issue.

No way do we fritter as much...or even 5 percent of the waste that is being poured down the drain by the worlds largest consumer of basic and luxury goods.:big_boss:

Let's also see the corruption in our countries that actually destroys lives of our poor people! The West has corruption but it doesn't have the same effect.

We have ostentatious display of wealth amidst a sea of poverty, waste amidst a sea of want and hunger, callousness where the masses need empathy.

I at least don't see India is position to pontificate. What they are doing is bad obviously, we have worse happening right in our countries.

The laws in our countries are mostly for the poor.

OK. I see much more arrogance in our own countries.

In their case at least they have a cause, what is ours?

I see many Pakistanis point out on a daily basis how they are a nuclear power and so the world should respect them and fear them! The threat to blow everything up.

I see many people in India, especially our petty babus and MLAs and ministers become arrogant as soon as they get the kursi, I am sure it is same across the border. Misuse of power is no less rampant here, in fact much more. In USA, even the president is not above the law. In South Asia, every one who is something thinks the laws no longer apply to him/her.

Frankly, I think the average American is more modest than the average Indian/Pakistani. If they are proud of their country's achievements, they have a reason.

Many of us are arrogant for much less.
