Pro-life protesters turned out in numbers

More than a million people are said to have taken part in a march in Madrid to oppose government plans to liberalise Spain's abortion law.

Several dozen centre-right opposition party joined the demonstration, which was backed by Roman Catholic bishops.

Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero wants to introduce abortion on demand.

At present, a pregnancy can only be terminated in mainly Catholic Spain under specific circumstances.

It is the latest in a series of ethical issues which have pitted the Catholic right against the government, which has legalised gay marriage and made divorce easier.

Police estimates put the crowd at 250,000, but the regional government said that over a million had turned out, with the organisers claiming a turnout of two million.

'Rights and respect'

Saturday's march, called Every Life Matters, has brought together more than 40 religious and civil society groups.

They are demanding that the government withdraw the draft law currently before parliament, which would introduce abortion on demand within the first 14 weeks of a pregnancy.

It would also permit girls aged 16 and 17 to have an abortion without their parents' knowledge.

"This new law is a barbarity," said one protester, Jose Carlos Felicidad, from the southern town of Algeciras.

"In this country, they protect animals more than human beings," he told AFP news agency.

Spain's existing law, dating from 1985, allows abortion in cases of rape, and when there are signs of foetal abnormality.

Spanish women can also end a pregnancy if their physical or psychological health is at risk. In practice, the last category has been used to justify the vast majority of abortions - of which there were 112,000 in 2007.

The government says the new law is about respect and rights for women, and that anyone wanting to terminate a pregnancy will first be explained the alternatives - including state help for young mothers.

It also claims its proposal will make abortion safer - by ensuring the procedure does not happen beyond 22 weeks of a pregnancy.

The BBC's Steve Kingstone in Madrid says that in recent years shocking cases have emerged in which doctors performed abortions on women eight months pregnant, with the justification that their mental health was under threat.

Load of BS = 22 weeks!!!!
And even bigger BS that doctors performed abortions on women eight months pregnant, with the justification that their mental health was under threat.
You dont want the baby just give it up after its born.....as for the mental health, its proven that abortions can trigger significant physical, emotional, and spiritual repercussions.
Abortion not just kills the baby but affects the mother in more ways than one, from infections, to internal scarring to infertility and a 50% increase in breast cancer later on in life etc etc! Apart from physical side affects there are psychological spin offs such as depression, acute anxiety, eating disorders, suicide and alchoholic tendencies.....

Bravo to these people for standing up against abortion but seriously the work here is not done......terminating pregnancy before 22 weeks should not be an option unless serious health is at risk (life and death situation).....

Just something to think about "its been proven that as early as nine weeks the unborn baby can feel pain and a vast majority of people only realize they are pregnant after 5 weeks anyway!

Thank you for sharing your view point as you do often, it's nice to read your post and sense you enthusiasm for the topics discussed, especially in the Humanities section.

IMO, I support the up to a million Spanish people who came out today and protested Abortion, I believe they are supporting a good cause and are supporting the life of a baby.

Now keep in mind those who believe in allowing abortion under certain circumstances and situations i.e. rape, have you remember the overwhelming cases of women seeking abortion are women who have never been raped. They are most likely promiscuous women who obviously have had unprotected sex which resulted in a planned or unplanned pregnancy...Later these women can be indecisive about having the baby, and during the pregnancy think about doing the abortion which many times is in the stage of a late-term abortion (meaning the fetus or baby is moderately-largely developed)...

So we must remember most of the women seeking abortion are not rape victims, many times they are promiscuous women. Sometimes, women who end up in divorces decide to "cancel" if I may use that word or "abort" their pregnany/baby because of the divorce...

These are difficult matters for society, and these are ultimately family matters that happen to rest on the conscience of many Nations.

Feel free to share any other thoughts and reflections you may have.

Yes thats the reason why I voted 'under certain conditions and situation' on the poll.......
Rape is a beastly act and even worse is, if a baby is conceived during this heinous activity.
I could never judge the poor ladies who have gone through this ordeal and therefore an option to terminate the pregnancy should be available to those ladies but only after a lot of counselling.
For the rest who cant be bothered to control their carnal feelings or even consider a thing called 'protection' and take the easy way out......they should be put in jail and punished as though they had killed someone (but hey arent they already in jail- especially a mental one since they will never forget about the abominable crime they have committed)
