The attitude of North Indians is obviously due to the fact that they were at the receiving end of horrible atrocities for hundreds of years at the hands of the intolerant and barbaric invaders. They see Somnath, Mathura, Kashi, the riots, remember all the atrocities and this forms their opinons.
Kerala received Islam in peace, not Northern India and that shapes the difference in opinions.
Again South of the Deccan is not all free from this thinking. Bahamani rulers carried out several genocides (each a minimum of 100,000 people) almost annually. The people at the receiving end of those have as hardened attitudes as North Indians. Same would be people near Humpi (the ruins of the beautiful Vijayanagar empire) that was destroyed so thoroughly, it is still in ruins and is a world heritage site now.
