Trailer-mounted small power plants offered
ISLAMABAD (March 27 2010): A Karachi-based firm, Meshe International, has offered to provide trailer-mounted packaged small power stations to deal with the power shortages immediately. At least 22 countries in different parts of the world have already installed such power stations to meet immediate power requirements.
The United States has announced $125 million as assistance to rehabilitate the de-rated thermal power stations which could be partly used for purchase of such small units. The quickest and easy way is to install power plants of 1 MW, 1.5 MW and 1.7 MW on heavy fuel/diesel fuel/gas oil on 40-foot containers, sufficient to provide electricity to at least 3,000 houses, industrial complexes and units suffering power shortages, hospitals, major cities and villages etc.
Such small power plants can also be installed in far-flung areas in Balochistan and other parts of the country where Wapda cannot supply electricity through transmission lines. "It will be good if the government installs unique power plants of various mega watts to deal with the power shortage in the shortest possible time," commented one power sector analyst.
The project can start operation within 10-12 months after the opening of letter of credit. The manufacturer/supplier has installed 939 units so far all over the world with power generating capacity of 1,785 MW. The countries which have installed small power plants are as follows:
Cuba 1,062.MW; Italy 1.70 MW, Haiti 61 MW Dominican Republic 37 MW, El Salvador 20.80 MW, Honduras 19.60 MW, Nicaragua 181 MW, Chile 13 MW, Cyprus 11 MW, Guinea 4.20 MW, Guyana 2.70 MW, Venezuela 48 MW, Brazil 157.50 MW, Iraq 52 MW+ 360 MW, Saudi Arabia 6 MW, Malawi 10 MW, Nepal 3 MW, India 45.20 MW, Cambodia 15 MW, Philippines 13 MW, Korea 11.40 MW, Papua New Guinea 4.50 MW and Kurdistan Local Government 300 MW.
The equipment has following additional advantages: (i) early power generation; (ii) economic generation; (iii) simple operation; (iv) low fuel cost; (v) easy maintenance; (vi) small area for the plant; (vii) easy transportation and simple installation; and (viii) environment-friendly.
