ISLAMABAD (March 18 2010): During Pak-US strategic dialogue, to be held on March 28, Islamabad will present to Washington for financing 20 new energy sector projects of about $6 billion, official sources told Business Recorder. However, Pakistan is requesting the US to provide financing $6 billion for these projects, sources added.
Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani will chair a meeting on Thursday to finalise the agenda of the strategic dialogue. The details of energy sector projects, which are to be tabled before the US for funding, are as follows: (i) Munda Dam 740 MW ($400 million) to provide 2699 GWhr of energy to the national grid; (ii) Kuram Tangl Dam, 83 MW ($60 million); (iii) 100 MW Sindh Wind Farm ($25 million) to provide energy supply of 300 GWh/yr to the national grid; (iv) Gomal Zam Dam, 17 MW ($40 million).
According to Wapda, if the project is located in a troubled region, it would figure considerably higher for priority USG investment. There is an issue of tariff subsidy requirement; (v) Satpara Dam 17 MW ($10 million); (vi) Naphtha Fuel Plant ($25 million) will be helpful in conversion of surplus naphtha fuel instead of gas in combined cycle plants, providing significant gas load shedding benefit; (vii) Kunhar Pusakhi Nat Gas Processing Plant ($30 million) will be a new gas processing plant that will bring 250 mmcfd natural gas on line, a very significant contribution to gas load shedding.
The project is already underway with OGDC infusion from USG which could be a significant influence for success; (viii) Cavaller Energy Corp, LNG Terminal ($30 million). The project is a private investor led Flating Storage Re-gasification Unit (FSRU), moored offshore with natural gas send out capacity of 240 tons/hr and two million tons per annum; (ix) Natural Gas Production Enhancement and Efficiency Project (NGEEP) ($70 million).
The World Bank is also funding this project which will reduce significant gas consumption; (x) Warsak Dam Hydro Electric Power Project. Rehabilitation to restore 140 MW of capacity ($30 million); (xi) Mangla Hydroelectric Power Station rehabilitation ($60 million).
This project aims to add 30 MW additional power supply to the national grid; (xii) Sukl Kinari Hydropower Project of 840 MW( $150 million), (xiii) Qadirpur Nat Gas Field($30 million). This project is expected to restore and enhance compression plants for Pakistan's third largest gas producing field, saving about 690 million cubic feet of gas a day, of over 20 percent of current production; (xiv) Lower Spat Gah Hydropower Project ($30 million).
Run-of-river greenfield project for 657 MW of power and 2189 GWh/yr of energy to the national grid; (xv) Bagasse-based cogeneration at sugar mills ($15 million). This project will generate 405 MW of power; (xvi) Tank Zam Dam Project ($40 million).
This project will supply 26 MW of power to the national grid. (xvii) Mansehra Transmission ($30 million); (xviii) Chakwal Transmission ($15 million); (xix) Neelam Jhelum to Ravat Transmission ($50 million).
