Default The Pride Of China Crashes And Burns

The Pride Of China Crashes And Burns

May 6, 2010: For the second time in three years, it was revealed that one of China's J-10 fighters crashed. There may have been more. The two crashes that are known were initially kept quiet. News of these mishaps escaped only because of special circumstances. The most recent loss (on April 22nd) killed its pilot, who was a senior colonel. That rank and reputation led to a big funeral, attracting a lot of military and political officials. That made it difficult to conceal how the colonel died. The 2007 crash was in a rice paddy in the rural northeast. The wreckage was not immediately removed, and eventually someone with a cell phone camera and an Internet connection came along, and the pictures got out. It is believed that there have been more crashes, which have been kept from the public. Nearly 200 J-10s have been built so far, but the design has not worked out as hoped.

The J-10 began development in 1988 and first flew in 1996. The J-10 is based on the abandoned Israeli Lavi (an improved F-16) project. The J-10 initially used a Russian engine (the AL-31F, the same one used in the Su-27), and was to have used Israeli electronics. But the United States leaned on the Israelis to back off making the Chinese air force too lethal, given the probability of American pilots possibly having to fight the Chinese air force some day. The Chinese developed their own avionics, based on Russian equipment. But this did not work out well. The J-10 is also now using a Chinese copy of the Russian AL-31F engine, and the poor reliability of this engine appears to have been the cause of several accidents.

The J-10 looks something like the American F-16, and weighs about the same (19 tons). Like the F-16 the J-10 has only one engine. The J-10 turned out to perform poorly in air-to-air combat. In response, the Chinese have been reconfiguring some of them as a fighter-bombers (the J-10C). This two seat version can carry over four tons of bombs and missiles and has been equipped with a fire control system for delivering missiles and smart bombs. The J-10C will have a weapons officer to concentrate on hitting things on the ground.

China is seeking export sales for the J-10, selling the aircraft as an "F-16 replacement", but for half the price. This is not going well, because there are so many used F-16s for sale, at less than what new J-10s cost. Despite all that, the Chinese are quite proud of the J-10, as it is the first high performance jet fighter designed (albeit with Israeli plans) and built in China.

Hmm a article with no merit........There have been two reported crashes in three years and suddenly it is a huge conspiracy....... How many MKI's have crashed in the last year alone? As for the whole nonsense about exporting them Since the PLAAF is still filling orders and the PAF is next in line I do not think they are looking at orders quite yet.

I think keys this article has taken a slant to serve a nefarious interest. The fact remains that J10 is good enough to have caused concern to theAmericans. Secondly what is the basis for the claim about its poor performance in air to air combat. Also worth noting is the claim about WS10, which is totally unsubstantiated.
We do not know the cause of these two crashes. However the only trials of WS10 have been on J11 associated with AL31 F. The chinese would not be stupid enough to try to put an untested engine on their frontline plane, without completing test bed trials. From all available indications these are still going on.So it seems that the AL31fns are the faulty ones , if at all the problem was engine related. Also 2 crashes in 3 yrs is hardly a catastrophy.

F22,B-2,B-52,MKI,F-16's,F-15's,F-18's, all are fine when they crash but when a J-10 will crash it becomes an issue specially for Indian media.

^^ Never read even once. It is from a blog and I rarely see blogs being quoted by the mainstream Indian media.

China’s PLA opens up to show off J10, its first indigenous fighter jet
Jane Macartney at Yangcun Air Base

Engines screaming, China’s most advanced fighter jets took off, soared into a vertical climb, spun into rolls and veered off into a clear blue sky leaving a trail of smoke and the acrid smell of aviation fuel in its wake.

The 24th Fighter Division of the Chinese Air Force yesterday showed off a formation of its J10 — or Annihilator 10 — to a select group of international military attachés for the first time.

Back on the ground after the demonstration of aerial acrobatics Senior Colonel Yan Feng, commander of the division, gave the 51 attachés their first glimpse of the cockpits and the home-made jet turbines of China’s only indigenous fighters.

It was the second time that China has allowed foreign media onto the base — and the first such trip in eight years. Colonel Yan promised to host more tours as part of a campaign by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to cast off its reputation for secrecy and nurture a more transparent image.

Four jets took part in the 15-minute show, completing a fly-by in diamond formation with their wingtips a mere 5m (16ft) apart and a series of multiple rolls and spins. Colonel Yan even flew his jet in front of the viewing stand with his wheels just 3m off the ground.

Group Captain Stephen Wilson, the British Air Force Attaché, , described the show as impressive. “This is a highly manoeuvrable aircraft. They should not be compared with the Red Arrows, but the Chinese Air Force is very competent and that came through in this performance.”

China first showed off the J-10 in public in 2008. Their finest moment to date was when 17 flew over Tiananamen Square to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Communist China on October 1 last year.

However, although the PLA hails the accomplishment of developing China’s first indigenous fighter, the J10 is not entirely home-made. It is believed to be loosely based on the early-generation US F16. Israel helped at the start with aspects of avionics and aerodynamics until it was warned off by Washington. Earlier models were equipped with Russian jet turbines, complicating future sales potential.

One military expert said: “For this type of third-generation aircraft it’s a serious plane. It’s very good. But it is still equivalent only to an early F16.”

Another attaché said that the technology of its wheels, among other aspects, means that it could not be used on board any aircraft carrier that China may build, underscoring how far the PLA still lags behind Western militaries.

The expert said: “The West is still far ahead. We have so many decades of technology and such a depth of research and capability that they just don’t have yet. They are about a generation behind. But they are catching up.”

China could take a major leap forward when it finally unveils its fourth-generation J11, which Chinese generals have hinted could be shown off in public as early as 2017, well ahead of US forecasts.

Colonel Yan was coy when asked about the J11, but said that he hoped to demonstrate the J10 at international air shows as early as next year. “I want to fly with the Thunderbirds,” he joked.

Manufacturers will be hoping that international exposure could boost sales. Last year China sold 36 J10s to Pakistan for $1.4 billion (£910 million), well above the $25 million each that Pakistan had wanted to pay but cheaper than the $50 million per plane paid by India for a shipment of F16s. Iran, Thailand and Myanmar are all believed to have expressed interest in adding the J10 to their air force fleets.

A bit of nonsense In this article but the fact the PLAAF is showing it off now would make things a little harder to hide and relevant tot this thread
