Bangladeshi 'militants' arrested



Police say several JMB members have been arrested in recent months


Five suspected militants of the banned Jamaat-ul Mujahideen group have been arrested in Bangladesh following a raid on their training camp, police say. A large number of weapons have also been recovered from the camp located in a remote hilly area in the south-east.

The group has been blamed for a series of bomb attacks on security forces and civilians in recent years.

Correspondents say it is the first time the security forces have raided a fully-fledged militant training camp.

The suspects were arrested on Sunday in a forest in Khagrachari district, 175 kms (110 miles) southeast of the capital, Dhaka, a spokesman for Bangladesh's anti-crime Rapid Action Battalion said.

The JMB is one of several radical Islamic groups trying to establish Islamic law in Bangladesh and has been blamed for a series of bombings in 2005.

Hundreds of the group's activists have been detained over the past two years, with many being put on trial.
Some were involved in an assassination attempt on Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina in 2004, police said.
