A boat carrying five Sri Lankan fishermen, who went missing while they were heading back to Sri Lanka, has been found by Bangladeshi Naval authorities with the fishermen on board.
A spokesman for the Sri Lanka Ministry of Fisheries told the Daily Mirror yesterday that these fishermen had been rescued on August 8 had been brought to land. Later the Bangladesh authorities had informed its High Commission in Sri Lanka.
“The victims, two from Trincomalee and three from Dewundara have been taken to Chithagoon Harbour on the 10th,” the spokesman said. He said that the boat, in which these fishermen traveled, was among the nine boats that carried 48 fishermen who were arrested in Indian waters and went missing on July 11, due to engine trouble. The Indian Coast Guard handed over only eight boats to the Sri Lanka Navy.”
“The fishermen are in good health and they have spoken to authorities” he said. As the boat belongs to a private owner, he has to repair the boat that carried the victims. Therefore the date for those fishermen to return has not yet been confirmed, the spokesman added.
