Sri Lanka to train Pak army

Friday, 21 Aug, 2009

COLOMBO: Following the victory of the Sri Lankan army over the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a militant outfit once considered by many as an invincible force, Pakistan has asked Sri Lanka to provide training to its military personnel.

The government of Pakistan wants the Sri Lankan military to train its personnel in counter-insurgency operations, the Commander of the Sri Lankan Army, Lt-Gen Jagath Jayasuriya, told journalists on Thursday.

He said several other countries had also sought information about the strategy and tactics adopted by the Sri Lankan armed forces to decimate the LTTE in just three years of intense fighting.

Pakistan helped Sri Lanka fight the LTTE by supplying arms when other countries had put an embargo on arms sales to the country.

Adm Wasantha Karannagoda, a former naval chief who is currently the National Security Adviser, had said at an international naval seminar in the UK that the strategies and tactics used by the Sri Lankan navy to tackle the LTTE’s naval arm could be of use to other navies because in the conflicts of the future navies would be facing not battleships and destroyers but small and fast boats of non-state rogue navies which could be indulging in insurgencies, piracies and trafficking of various kinds.

Now this indeed is a good development if it ever gets materialized of course. I have always maintained that instead of sending our officers and soldiers to countries like USA and UK, they should be sent to Vietnam, and North Korea. Therefore, they could overcome their inferiority complex as well as could learn some real stuff how to fight with a mighty enemy.

well we helped the sri lankans with military hardware it is actually helpful that we learn from there tactics in defeating the mighty LTTE!!

however...LTTE in its last days was isolated unlike the taliban that still get ammunation and fighters from afghanistan....aided by...well that is debatable!!

Thanks to bring up the point Interceptor. The Sri Lankan Army is the best military machine currently as regards to jungle warfare, so we can learn alot from them.

As for the real stuff, why dont we send our troops inside the ground zero to learn real stuff?

Sir jungle wouldnt exactly mean the jungles of South america, but anywhere where we have to commit out forces in the terrain with heavy vegetation, like in upper kashmir, the training would come in handy.

BTW, which other field do you think they can train us?

Mujhey kya pata. I have lived in south east Asia for 4.5 years, and know what kind of Jungles they have, no where in Pakistan they are found (except in former East Pakistan). So why to get Jungle warfare training when we don’t have to fight in tose kind of Jungles?

The same old Qsaark!

Did i say we-have-jungles-in-Pakistan?

And yes the Sris do specialize in jungle warfare, so that's what we can get from them. i will again say that let's not stick to futile arguments about the word 'jungle', you know what i wanted to say and i have made myself amply clear in my last post.
