India voices concerns over US drone sale to Pak

NEW DELHI: Indian External Affairs Minister S M Krishna has reacted to a possible arms deal involving sale of US drones to Pakistan. Krishna has emphatically told America that an arms sale would create instability in the region adding that in the past, such weapons have always been used against India.

Pakistan has drawn up a big list of military purchases from the United States. But, what's worrying India is that Islamabad is lobbying hard to get the deadly Predators Drones from the United States.

The worries of New Delhi are that any military equipment bought by Pakistan is essentially meant to be used against India, said Indian External Affairs Minister S M Krishna.

Pakistan is seeking Predator Drones from the United States saying they need the drones to fight militancy along the Afghan border. But, invariably the drones would be used along the Indian border both for spying and combat missions, he worried

A list has been drawn up and they include helicopters, night vision devices, laser guided ammunition.

Predator drones are particularly worrisome as they constitute top of the line technology. They are unmanned aerial vehicles with weaponry that can accurately hit targets. The United States is using them extensively for fighting militants, including in parts of Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province area.

India does not have anything equivalent to the predators and there is concern about India having them. Currently India is working to get an equivalent of the predator. This is the Harop system from Israel but it will be a long time before India gets them, he added.

IMO, The hypocrisy of other nations is quite despicable. Whenever, Pakistan makes a significant procurement to strengthen it's defence some nations will secretly lobby in the halls of Washington to prevent the deal from materializing...

Anyways, I really hope we acquire the Predator Drones they will certainly be very useful in our lethal covert war efforts.

The Predator Drones if acquired will be used against the enemies of Pakistan both foreign and domestic. Though it's primary use will be to fight and defeat the terrorist and militants that are linked with foreign IA's in Pakistan's NW Frontier... If this deal goes through this would mean Pakistan is 1 of 5 nations to possess the MQ-1 Predator which includes US (esp. CIA), UK, Italy, Turkey, and Pakistan.

This is such a powerful offensive, defensive, and intelligence gathering-reconnaissance weapon. It obviously has stealth capability, and has the state-of-the-art laser guided precision weapons it carries the infamous AGM-114 Hellfire.

The War is going High Tech, that's for sure.

Omg this is hilarious. Nuclear subs, state of the art combat fighters, aircraft carriers and supersonic nuclear missiles won't affect stability in the region but UAV's will....

Aadat se Banali Hai tum nay to Munir apni
Jis Shehr may bhi rehna Uktai huey Rehna

"You have made it a habit of yours Munir(Niazi)"
Where ever you live you are disgruntled with it.
This verse in my view completely echoes the indian tendencies of bleeting whenever there is talk of Pakistan getting something while they go on a buying spree.
However the problem with the drones are not the indians but the Americans themselves, who have a genuine concern about leakage of sensitive technology. I still think we may have to do this our selves with collaboration of some friends.

No you are wrong here. These are things needed by India to be a super power. The US, Russia and China have them because they are super powers.

subtle enough.

This is a normal reaction that any one would expect from your adversary. When India went for MRCA, nuclear subs or Indo-US nuclear deal, Pakistan complained about de-stability of the region. When Pakistan went for german subs, RD-33 engines etc India complained. This is expected from both of them. There is nothing wrong from both sides.

Listen the 'point' you are making is not sufficient.

Rather it is disingenuous of India to suggest that a US military arms and equipment deal with Pakistan which includes sophisticated night vision equipment, gunships, and possibly Predator Drone is going to disrupt "regional stability". If India is so 'concerned' over regional stability it would stop funding and supporting BLA terrorist and separatist, it would also make a genuine effort to resolve the Kashmir dispute, which by all facts and observations it has not done.

India has no right to even claim Pakistan's 'procurements' lead to 'regional instability'. In fact, I argue a strong and well prepared Pakistan leads to greater regional stability, as enemies will think twice before initiating aggression.
