Military fighter airplanes: Russia fears competition from China
Military fighter airplanes: Russia fears competition from China
Moscow, Russia - MiG and Sukhoi cast against sale of aircraft engines to the Eastern Country?

(WAPA) - Sukhoi Industries and MiG (Mikoyan Gurevich), the largest Russian manufacturers of fighter planes, expressed their strong negative opinion on the sale of 100-RD-93 engines by Rosoboronexport - the agency by whose intermediary Russia exports airplanes, helicopters and weapons of various kind. T hese engines are designed to equip the FC-1 Chinese production, competing for air superiority fighter MiG 29 Fulcrum. To tell the truth, it's a dated model, now, as it entered service in the Soviet army in 1983, still used by Russian aircraft and several other countries.
I t seems that the two manufacturers fear the threat of strong Chinese competition in the production of this aircraft type, the Russian press agency "RIA Novosti" reveal. "The Chinese fighter, although lower in performance than the MiG-29, is sold at a price of 10 million US dollars, compared with about 35 million of the MiG", a source remained anonymous says. To this add the statement of Mikhail Pogosyan, Sukhoi's Director General: "To avoid any form of unfair competition, re-export of technology must be subject to the approval of the original manufacturers".
And it does not help the fact the two machines are located at the center of competition in a tender Egypt issued for a contract of 32 fighters. It seems the Arab country has initiated negotiations with Pakistan for the licensed production of aircraft: the FC-1 Xiaolong, single-engine multi-role fighter developed jointly by China and Pakistan, which are known as the JF-17 Thunder. More, the FSMTC - the Russian Federal Department for military-technical cooperation - has already approved in late 2007 re-export of RD-93 to Egypt, as part of a package of FC-1 aircraft.
But Russian industries, already in the recent past have found themselves competing with the Chinese in terms of military aircraft and weaponry in the tender. In several cases they accused China of infringement of intellectual property agreements, such as of SU-27SK: they they know would fight against windmills and Russian Rosoboronexport itself would have silenced them, claiming the decision - whether it allows or not re-export of military technology - is up to central government. Producers, including bigger ones, were never consulted on the topic.
Meanwhile, with giant footsteps, India impending, starting with multi-role fighter jet, nearly a fifth generation Tejal of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, created to replace the MiG-21 Fishbed ... (Avionews)
