F-16 in pakistan air apace - SAMAA TV

Pakistan has received the first three upgraded F-16 fighter aircrafts with an official saying the aircraft could be used to deal with "all internal and external threats".

An official spokesman claimed Pakistan would be the only country besides Israel to get the latest version of the F-16, reflecting the strategic relations between Islamabad and Washington.

The three new jets were flown to a Pakistani airbase this afternoon and the 15 others will be delivered by the end of this year, officials said.

A Pakistan Air Force spokesman told a briefing at the Air Headquarters here yesterday that there was no restriction on the use of the F-16s and they would be used to "deal with all internal and external threats".

Five more jets will be delivered about 45 days later and the delivery of all 18 jets will be completed by the end of the year, the spokesman said.

Thats not true though many countries have block 50/52 variations such as the Hellenic Air Force(Greece) and surely many other countries. Not to mention the MRCA that US propose to give an even more deadlier and advance variant of the F-16 to the Indian Air Force. Also Israel modifies its own F-16's to their specification and in many ways they are more advance then what the US offers.

But this is a nice site to see the much expected F-16 have arrived home these jets were much expected.

First batch of three F-16s lands in Pakistan

Sunday, June 27, 2010

ISLAMABAD: With top security officials terming it a great breakthrough, the first batch of three latest version F-16 C/D Block-52 high-tech Fighting Falcons landed in Pakistan on Saturday.

“The induction of multi-role F-16 C/D Block-52 will give a great edge and a potent punch to Pakistan Air Force (PAF),” said a top official, who expressed his happiness over the arrival of Lockheed Martin’s F-16s at the PAF Base Shahbaz (Jacobabad).

These US Falcons reached Pakistan under “Peace Drive I” programme, continuing a long tradition of naming F-16 international sales programmes with the word Peace. The programme raises the total number of F-16s ordered by Pakistan to 54. The Pakistan Air Force received its first F-16, in the Block 15 F-16A/B configuration, in 1982. Pakistan has been operating Lockheed Martin aircraft since 1963, when it received C-130B airlifters.

Trained at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, Pakistani pilots brought the fighting Falcons to Pakistan. These pilots were the first to train in the US since 1983, when the last class of Pakistani pilots trained at the Luke Air Force Base, Ariz.

Air Marshal Mohammad Hasan, Deputy Chief of the Air Staff (Operations) and Air Marshal Waseem-ud-Din, Deputy Chief of the Air Staff (Administration), along with other senior PAF officials, received the aircraft at the base.

Pakistan attaches great significance to its air defence needs, as it had signed a contract with the US government in the year 2005-06 for the acquisition of 18 F-16 C/D Block 52 aircraft.

Under this arrangement, PAF would receive these state-of-the-art aircraft from the US in different batches. The delivery of all 18 aircraft would be completed by the end this year.

The F-16 C/D Block 52 aircraft is a high tech fighter aircraft equipped with sophisticated state-of-the-art avionics suite, latest weapons with night precision attack capability. These aircraft are much superior to the F-16A/Bs already in the inventory of the PAF. In June 2005, Pakistan requested the Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of 36 F-16C/D block 50/52 aircraft. In June 2006, the Pentagon notified Congress of its intention to approve the sale and Lockheed Martin was awarded a contract for 12 F-16C and six F-16D block 52 aircraft in Dec 2006. The aircraft will be armed with AMRAAM and Sidewinder missiles and the Sniper targeting pod.

The new planes purchased by Pakistan, Block 52 versions of the multi-role fighter, are far more advanced than the older A-model versions and will allow pilots to conduct operations at night and greatly enhance their use of precision munitions.

JACOBABAD: The first batch of the latest version F-16 C/D Block 52 high tech fighter aircraft that arrived Pakistan yesterday at the newly developed PAF Base in Jacobabad, have been formally inducted in Pakistan Air Force, Geo News reported Sunday.

Addressing the august ceremony held here in connection with formally inducting the fighter jets in the PAF fleet, Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman said this was a dream that came true today, underscoring the need for cooperation in future as well.

Suleman said the handing of new fighter jets would boost confidence in relations between the two counties, adding the F-16s already present in Pakistan helped a lot in anti-terror war.

The inducting of these jets will mark beginning of new chapter in the PAF’s technology; also, they will go a long way in Pakistan’s defence from internal and external challenges.

US ambassador in Pakistan Anne Patterson was also present in the ceremony.

United States Air Force Chief of Staff Gen Norton Schwartz said, ‘I pay rich tribute to the Pakistani institutions, people and the government for their sacrifices in war against terrorism.

Norton said his country will upgrade F-16s already present in Pakistan to be geared up for night-time attack, adding the inclusion of these jets in Pak fleet is a symbol of Pak-US friendship and alliance.

General Schwartz said these planes are fully capable to precisely hit the target in war-ravaged areas.

Ambassador Patterson said the planes would come in handy to save Pakistani people from saboteurs, adding Pak-US ties are being enhanced not only in defence but in energy sector as well.

She said the US government wants to work in concert with the people here in Jacobabad with funds to be provided for water and hospitals here, adding the efforts projected by Pakistan and the US are aimed at creating peace in the region and world.

Pakistan attaches great significance to its air defence needs. Taking stock of the situation the country had signed a contract with the US government in 2006 for acquisition of 18 F-16 C/D Block 52 aircraft.

Under this arrangement, PAF would receive these aircrafts in different batches. The delivery of all the 18 aircrafts would complete by the end of this year.

The US gave Pakistan four used F-16 jets last year with 18 more to be yet handed, as the process regarding the supply of these new fighter jets would complete in December 2010.

SHAHBAZ AIR BASE (June 27, 2010): With the induction of latest version of F-16 aircraft, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has achieved the capability to carry out all-weather night time operations, said Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman here on Sunday.

Addressing the formal handing over ceremony of three Block 52 C/D version of F-16 aircraft by the US at the newly developed base near Jacobabad, Chief of Air Staff said this technology will not only eliminate our existing limitations of precision night operations but also enable the PAF to meet its mission more effectively.

"The mission of the PAF is to Maintain Peace with Honor in the Region: Should this primary effort of maintaining peace fail, we will use our resources including these aircraft to defend our country against any internal or external threats."

General Norton A Schwartz, Chief of Staff, United States Air Force (USAF), especially visited Pakistan to attend the handing over ceremony.

US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne W. Patterson, Vice Admiral Michael LeFever, US Defence Representative in Pakistan along with other senior PAF, USAF, civil and military officials were also present on the occasion. Lt Gen Hostage of USAF (Centcom) handed over the documents of the newly inducted aircraft to Air Marshal Mohammad Hasan, Deputy Chief of Air Staff (Operations), PAF.

The newly manufactured aircraft by Lokheed Martin had reached Pakistan on Saturday.

Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar termed the handing over of the aircraft to Pakistan a happy augury as the deal for supply of these aircraft by the US was signed back in 2006, but it became controversial at the hands of critics on both sides. However, he said of late it matured following efforts put in by the "good people" living in both the friendly countries.

Later, talking to media-persons, he said other countries in the region had already such type of aircraft available with them while acquiring of latest F-16 aircraft by Pakistan has brought back the balance of power in the region.

As far as the overhauling and up-gradation of existing F-16 aircraft is concerned, he said initially 14 aircraft from the existing fleet of PAF would be upgraded with the US assistance as a team of technicians, engineers and experts had already been working to transfer the up-gradation and repair skills to their Pakistani counterparts.

This handing over has formally started the delivery of the fleet of 18 F-16 C/D Block 52 fighter aircraft to Pakistan. PAF would receive these state-of-the-art aircraft from the US Government in different batches. The delivery of all the 18 aircraft would complete by the end of this year. In addition to delivery of 18 aircraft by US, he said the friendly country would also help Pakistan in upgrading existing lot of F-16 aircraft matching to the latest version of the fighting falcons.

Pakistan among 26 nations equipped with 4,400 F-16s

Monday, June 28, 2010
By By Sabir Shah

LAHORE: Pakistan is one of the world’s 26 countries, which together possess over 4,400 F-16 fighter planes, best known for their advanced aerodynamics and avionics. India, meanwhile, may get F-16 ‘Super Vipers’ from American aerospace giant Lockheed Martin.

According to Lockheed Martin’s Vice President-Business Development (India), Orville Prins, the programme to deliver 18 F-16s to Pakistan, named as ‘Peace Drive I’, will raise the total number of F-16s ordered by Pakistan to 54. Orville Prins’ statement was reported by Press Trust of India on March 29, 2010 with a Dallas dateline. He had also stated that Pakistan’s ‘Peace Drive I’ order was for 12 F-16 Cs and six F-16 Ds.

Lockheed Martin’s Vice President-Business Development had assured the Indian media in the US that the F-16s being offered to India would be “much more advanced” than the fighters being provided to Pakistan.

Lockheed Martin is one of the six contenders in the Medium Multi-role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) along with US Boeing, French D’Assault, Swedish Gripen, European Consortium EADS and Russian MiG.

The other nations using these cost-effective combat “workhorses” to perform various kinds of missions and maintain around-the-clock readiness, include the US, Bahrain, Italy, Belgium, Chile, Denmark, Jordan, Netherlands, Israel, Indonesia, Morocco, Norway, Greece, Egypt, Oman, Poland, Venezuela, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Thailand, Singapore, Portugal, China and South Korea. Various versions of the F-16 fighter planes have been used in numerous combat operations t date by the US, Pakistan, Israel, NATO foroces, Holland, Turkey and Venezuela.

The Pakistan Air Force F-16s shot down at least 10 intruders from Afghanistan between May 1986 and January 1989 during the Soviet-Afghan war. Afghanistan also claimed to have shot down one Pakistani F-16 during an encounter on April 29, 1987, though the pilot had ejected safely and landed in Pakistani territory. Subsequently, Pakistani officials confirmed that the loss was an F-16, but asserted it was accidentally shot down in a friendly fire incident during a dogfight with an enemy aircraft violating the Pakistani territory. According to the PAF then, Flight Lieutenant Shahid Sikandar Khan’s F-16 was hit by a missile fired by another F-16 piloted by Squadron Leader Amjad Javed.

Although, F-16s of the Pakistan Air Force did not see a combat in the 1999 Kargil War, they were initially deployed in patrolling the border to ensure that Indian Air Force fighters did not cross the Line of Control.

Later in the war, lack of spare parts due to sanctions imposed on Pakistan, forced the PAF to withdraw its F-16 fleet from regular patrol duties. The PAF’s main opposition was the MiG-29, used by the Indians to provide fighter escort for Mirage 2000.

Though both Pakistani F-16s and Indian Mirage 2000 planes were reported tracking each other with their radars, no actual combat had taken place during the Kargil war.

The Pakistan Air Force has also been using its F-16 fleet to attack militant positions and support the Pakistan Army’s operations in North-West Pakistan against the Taliban insurgency. Prior to the operations in the Swat Valley, approximately 10 of the PAF’s F-16s were fitted with high-resolution infrared sensors for reconnaissance purposes, supplied by the United States, to provide the Pakistani military with detailed imagery of the area.

In “Operation Desert Storm” of 1991, the US had used 249 F-16s that flew 13,340 sorties in strikes against Iraq, the most of any Coalition aircraft. However, seven of these aircraft were lost in the process in just 42 days between January 16 and February 28, 1991 due to confirmed Iraqi ground fire, radar-guided surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles. This mission also marked the largest single operational F-16 strike package flown to date. From the end of “Operation Desert Storm,” until the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the American F-16s patrolled the US/UK imposed no-fly zones in Iraq and two air-to-air victories were scored by these F-16s in “Operation Southern Watch.” On 27 December 1992, a US F-16 shot down an Iraqi MiG-25 in the airspace over Iraq.

The F-16s were also employed by NATO during the Bosnian peacekeeping operations in 1994-95 in ground-attack missions and enforcing the no fly zone over Bosnia.

These F-16s have also been used by the United States in Afghanistan since 2001. In 2002, a tri-national detachment known as the European Participating Air Forces (Danish, Dutch and Norwegian) had deployed 18 F-16s at Kyrgyzstan to support “Operation Enduring Freedom” in Afghanistan. The US F-16s participated in the 2003 invasion of Iraq and the only loss suffered during this combat was witnessed on June 12, 2003, when a fighter jet crashed near Baghdad due to fuel shortage. Meanwhile, a US Army fire-controlled Patriot Radar was damaged on March 25, 2003, following an erroneous hit by an anti-radiation missile fired from another US F-16 on a patrolling mission over Iraq.

On June 7, 2006, two US F-16s dropped two 500 lb (230 kg) guided smart bombs at an Al-Qaeda safe house, killing Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, the leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq. On 25 February 25, 2009, a US F-16 shot down an Iranian jet, after it had entered into the Iraqi airspace. The F-16’s first air-to-air combat success was also achieved by the Since April 2005, eight Royal Netherlands Air Force F-16s, joined by four Royal Norwegian Air Force F-16s in February 2006, have been supporting International Security Assistance Force ground troops in Afghanistan. On August 31, 2006, a Dutch F-16 crashed in Ghazni province.
