from Dec-09 issue of AFM;

' a ceremony at Linkoping, Sweden, on October 21 marked the commencement of the final phase of testing of the PAF's Saab Erieye airborne early warning & control aircraft. This will be followed later this year by more trials in Pakistan, aimed at testing the complete system, including aircraft, radar C2 systems, communication and live situational picture in the PAF's Command and Control Ground Environment.'

Pakistan gets first of four AWACS aircraft

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Tuesday inducted the first of Airborne Warning and Control (AWAC) aircraft into its fleet.

India was the first to introduce the latest AWACS surveillance aircraft in the region when it received its first delivery of three Israel Aircraft Industries Phalcon systems in May this year.

Pakistan has procured its AWAC system from Sweden and the first of the four Saab-2000 Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft arrived to augment air power of the Pakistan Air Force.

“The aircraft landed on Tuesday at one of the Pakistan Air Force’s main operating bases, marking a major achievement in the air force’s overall modernisation plan,” according to a PAF statement. With the induction of Swedish Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft, PAF has become one of the few air forces in the world to have Airborne Early Warning capability.

The aircraft is fitted with the latest technology to detect aircraft flying at high and medium altitudes. With state-of-the-art system, it is also capable of detecting objects flying at lower levels over land and sea at extended ranges. The system is also capable of detecting surface targets over sea.

As compared to Pakistani’s AWAC system, the Indian Phalcon system provides tactical surveillance of airborne and surface targets and helps gather signal intelligence. It is also capable of tracking fighter planes, missiles and ground forces from a distance of 400 kilometres and in all weather conditions. Phalcon system can identify all types of aircraft and is programmed to differentiate between “the friend and the foe”. sajjad malik

Pakistan acquires airborne early warning aircraft

Wed Dec 9, 2009 7:05am GMT

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan has acquired the first of four airborne warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft from Sweden, an air force spokesman said on Wednesday, in a move to match the capabilities of its main rival, India.

The Saab-2000 AWACS aircraft was handed over to the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) on Tuesday.

"The aircraft landed at one of the PAF's main operating bases, marking the achievement of a major milestone in the overall modernisation plan of PAF," the spokesman said in a statement.

The air force gave no details of the cost of the deal nor did it say when the three remaining aircraft would be delivered.

The AWACS aircraft can detect high- and medium-altitude aircraft, low-level flying objects over land and sea and can pick up surface targets over the sea, the force said.

India acquired the first of three AWACS aircraft from Israel in May.

The nuclear-armed South Asian rivals have fought three wars since their independence from British rule in 1947 and strive to match each other's military capabilities.

India is also wary of its northeastern neighbour, China, which is the main supplier of defence hardware to Pakistan.

Relations between Pakistan and India improved after they launched a peace process in early 2004 but India suspended a broad peace process after last year's militant attacks on the Indian city of Mumbai by Pakistan-based Islamist militants.

India increased its defence spending by nearly a quarter in 2009/10 to $28.9 billion (17.9 billion pounds) as the government focussed on security following the Mumbai attacks in which 166 people were killed.

Pakistan raised its defence spending by 15.3 percent in the 2009/10 fiscal year to $4.2 billion, though defence analysts say much of the increase would be spend on the fight against al Qaeda and Taliban militants on its western border with Afghanistan.

There isn't much about Saab so what capabilities of the Saab are better compared to the Phalcon and the pros and cons you see in the Saab.

Something I posted on a forum that must not be named .

There are other factors that impact performance such as cooling mechanism, since the T/R module contains MMIC chips that are made of gallium arsenide (GaAs). GaAs have low thermal conductivity and efficient cooling is required to keep the system operating at peak performance. Here, the Phalcon has an advantage over the Erieye (air cooled) while the Erieye has greater endurance. The Phalcon has 360° coverage; you need two Erieye systems operating in tandem to achieve the same. Also, this platform is too expensive to use for constant surveillance of the border as you suggested. Effective use is to coordinate battle and help maintain air superiority over the battle field and this cannot always be achieved by one Erieye; 360° coverage is better. The choice of aircraft also impacts performance, the size and shape of the airframe, placement of the radome and the power plant (engine). For instance, the motion of propeller can cause modulation of the radiated signal another disadvantage is propeller aircrafts can assign less power to the AESA while a jet engine can generate more power useful for frying unprotected circuits on enemy planes or missiles.
There are so many factors to consider before you can conclude that one platform has an edge over the other and I haven’t even mentioned the most critical element the software that runs the system.

In contrast, the Erieye is limited to 150 Km for ground targets. It will have to get a lot closer to the action. IMO, PAF will likely lose one or more Eireye’s in an all out war and will need more systems perhaps the KJ200 is more expendable?

I haven't looked into the specifics of the Erieye yet but I can't imagine PAF would settle for a platform whithout taking all threats including ground targets into account.

Are the 4 Awacs we're building with the Chinese more powerful than the Erieye?
